Cash tolls on Pa. Turnpike to rise 10% in 2012
TweetHARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Fares on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will rise 10 percent for cash-paying customers in 2012, but those using E-ZPass won’t see an increase.
The turnpike commission approved the change at its meeting today to generate approximately $23 million in new revenue next year.
Nearly two-thirds of turnpike travelers already use E-ZPass. The commission says those customers currently get as much as a 7 percent savings on tolls and will be able to save about 17 percent next year.
The extra money is needed to help pay off bonds that fund highway improvements and mass transit systems around the state.
Gov. Tom Corbett has pledged to oppose all tax and fee increases. A spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment on whether the governor opposes the increase.

So the eastbound barrier (Gateway) toll will go from $4.30 to 4.73? That's insane! PA Turnpike already was too expensive. This is crazy. I can drive to Cleveland for over a dollar less after this change takes effect.
I agree, Mark. This is just insane. They want over $4 if you just go to the first exit in PA.
As a result, I go down 11 and through Chippewa on 14/51 to get over to 376 when going near the airport. Instead of collecting a more reasonable toll, the state gets nothing from me.
wow.....ridiculous. and the PA turnpike is nowhere near as safe to drive on as the ohio turnpike.
NilesOhio: Agreed. I don't mind a ticket system like Ohio has on its entire mainline where you pay for the distance you travel. But charging the same rate to go 10 miles to I-376 or 28 miles to I-79 isn't fair.
jrolley325: I will give them some credit, as they have had to modernize a highway that has the vestiges of a 20 foot flat median when it was built and 6% grades, neither of which are cheap or easy to fix. But if it costs almost $5 just to reach I-376, I'll have to rethink travel to PA as often, and if I do, which route I'll take.
I head through Columbiana also. That amount of money is insane, especially if they are counting on visitors to hit any of the locales over the state line or to head to Pgh
Thank you PA Turnpike for raising your rates. I will go the "back" way through Columbiana and through Chippewa. You will not get one more dollar from me.
