Scrappers notebook

On deck: The Scrappers and Tigers conclude their three-game set series tonight at 7:05 at Eastwood Field. Saturday, the Scrappers will be in Jamestown, N.Y., to open a three-game series against the first-place Jammers. The Scrappers’ next home games will be Tuesday and Wednesday against the State College Spikes. Game time for both nights will be 7:05.

Legacies: Three of the Tigers’ starters in Thursday’s lineup have connections to the Detroit Tigers. Catcher Patrick Leyland is the son of Tigers manager Jim Leyland. Second baseman Colin Kaline is the grandson of Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline. Left fielder Bo McClendon is the son of Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon. Jim Leyland and Lloyd McClendon both managed the Pittsburgh Pirates and Patrick Leyland lists Pittsburgh as his hometown. Leyland had one hit in four at-bats as his mother, Katie, watched.

League leaders: Jake Lowery’s first-inning RBI double gives him 10 for the season, putting him in third place among league leaders. Bryson Myles did not play but his 10 stolen bases was third best in the league going into Thursday’s action.

Fresh bullpen: Scrappers manager Dave Wallace said starter Harold Guerrero’s struggles happened at a fortunate time. “If there was a night to do it, it was tonight because we were pretty fresh in the bullpen.” Jeanmar Gomez, who has pitched with the Cleveland Indians this season, dominated in the four innings he threw for the Scrappers on Wednesday. The New York-Penn League was idle on Tuesday because of the MLB All-Star Game. “We had a lot of options down there [in the bullpen].” Nate Striz (2-1) relieved Guerrero and earned the win.

Bad start: The Tigers needed just eight pitches to take the lead. After a walk to Chad Wright, Eugenio Suarez doubled into the right-field corner. Right fielder Jordan Smith made a sliding attempt but was unable to touch the ball that resulted in a triple. Nine pitches later, Guerrero was in deep trouble after walking Jason King. Dean Green clobbered a 3-1 pitch over the right-center field fence for a three-run homer and 4-0 lead.
