'Don't call my bluff,' Obama warns Republicans

Published: Wed, July 13, 2011 @ 9:26 p.m.

President Barack Obama bluntly told Republican congressional leaders Wednesday they must compromise quickly if the government is to avoid an unprecedented default, adding, "Don't call my bluff" by passing a short-term debt limit increase he has threatened to veto.

The presidential warning, directed at House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., marked an acrimonious end to a two-hour negotiating session at the White House that produced no evident progress toward a compromise.

Another round of talks is set for Thursday.

But with a threatened default less than three weeks away, Moody's Investors Service announced it was reviewing the U.S. bond rating for a possible downgrade, and the Treasury said the annual deficit was on a pace to exceed $1 trillion for the third year in a row.

With the negotiations at a seeming standstill, Republicans drew a warning of a different sort, from an unlikely source - the party's Senate leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

In an interview with radio talk-show host Laura Ingraham, McConnell warned fellow conservatives that failure to raise the debt limit would probably ensure Obama's re-election in 2012.

The Republican party of no tax increases for the rich had better rethink their stand on increasing the deficit ceiling. There are many more non-rich then rich and they will not be happy if the government defaults and things like SS checks for our seniors are not issued. The 2012 election is around the corner, and the economy is no better today then it was before the House Republican majority.

actually I think its fearless leader and the secretary of the treasury decide who gets paid. So if there is no SS check it was a decision made by those two idiots

I say, call his bluff! He keeps wamnting to point his fingers at everyone else but refuses to look into the mirror. How's that "hopey changey" working out for you? This arrogant ninny is not a king! There are three branches of govt. with a set of checks and balances. The House should pass a short-term extension bill, send it to the Senate, and then let the President veto it. This way, if he withholds SS checks in August, it will be on him.

In Eric Cantor's world it's better to leave grandma hungry than ask for a dollar from the well off.

Call his bluff! He's the road block. All this is crap about the "wealthy"! The "great uniter" is literally our "Continental Divider".
He's got more Americans at each other's throats than anyone ever has.

Most of the Wealthy are DEMOCRATS! I know Republicans and none of them are jetting off to Europe or spending the winter in some tropical resort.

He's nothing but a socialist idealogue. He wants the US to become like Europe; no, rather more like the Balkans. If he were rational, he'd see what's going on in Greece, France, Ireland, Spain and some other holes of the world. And he wants this for us! Believe it!

During his campaign he talked about the 57 states of our nation; maybe he got that confused with Indonesia? Our Constitution is flawed? Huh? Are you kidding me? And he's a "Constitutional law professor" or whatever it was he did.

What the heck did we do to get him as a president? In 2012, we can correct THAT mistake, but if he gets his way now, the woe and misery in this country will eclipse the Great Depression and then some for years after that.

He's got to go!

So we should go back to what got us here. The 40 years prior to Obama was dominated by republican politics. 28 of the years or 70% was republican Presidents with the only 8 year democratic run was by Clinton that left the country with a balanced budget and prosperity. History has shown that less government lets the white collar crime of greed run wild. Look at Coolidge then Hoover as Presidents with a less government philosophy and see the result - The Great Depression. Look at Bush who fiddled while the mortgage crooks ran wild - The Great Recession. There is no reasonable person that can argue that the Bush administration did not know what was going on, he let it go on because it made him look good at the time with the excess construction.

Sing louder you baseless, bumbling bombastic bigots,..

As an American via your purely prejudicial posture and cunning crafting of lies I find your repulsively disgusting. However, as your opposition and my not bearing your same nor like sickness. I find you invigorating and for the defense, awareness and preservation of all sensible humanity. In a unquestionably justified manner to protect, defend and embrace the truth and facts I revel in exposing and destroying you.

Be it known via your self induced ignorance and harboring of such a manifestation of hate. Your problems and frustration is based in your inability deny the truth and the damning facts of your destructive effects are now at the forefront for all to see and experience in diabolic effect.

being are now finding out that the true Americans are no longer blind, tone deaf nor any longer agreeable to playing the role of submissive's of sufferance to your sick, silly separatist calls of secular stupidity,.. how ya like me know?

You're trying to allege the massive debt via deceptive theft that George Bush, Dick Cheney and the republican's forced upon the nation and global economy is somehow supposed to be president Obama's fault,.. you worthless lying savages.

If your race based lies bore any merit. Then why hasn't your " leaders " seized the opportunity to blare them?

Here's a headline link { GOP leaders Silent },.. http://www.vindy.com/news/2011/jul/13...

They're silent because they know they and those they aligned with. Have lied enough and the tricks and entrapment snares are at the forefront now. This president is the ultimate opposition and determined to stop the massive theft. Which now there's come a time where the truth and facts are impossible for them to try to spin,.. THEY did this.

They did it and crazed racist clowns like you have favored robbing and stealing from your neighbor so long. That you'd supported candidates that seized legislative power that has afforded debt, destruction by deplorable policies,.. FACE IT !!!

Hence the president absolutely refuses to allow and continuing of the poor, middle class, those willing and wanting to work and elderly and retirees. To continue to serve as your prey to be manically tricked, robbed and manipulatively mislead and discarded by your republican cloaked plots and plans to eternally enslave them,.. AND YOU DON'T LIKE THAT OPPOSITION !!!.

We can thank Bush for the gas prices. He let Exxon-Mobil merge, BP-Amoco Merge and Texaco-Chevron merge. Anyone with a lit bit of economic sense knows that when you let regional monopolies happen, there is no price competition.

Listen to the rhetoric and falsehoods being spewed, yet no one gets to the heart of the matter.

Not increasing the debt ceiling will destroy the economy AGAIN, and Wall Street (who already owns the political process) will get another round of bailouts.

As for Moody's rating anything, their ratings are a large part of the reason we are in this mess.

Moody's makes its money from Wall Street firms. They are the ones who said those crazy house loans were AAA rated deals...the highest rating possible.

Some of you would take us right back to ten years ago financially. What a shame that you haven't learned from the mistakes we've made.

falconeddy, he is trying to tax the rich. . .the republicans are blocking that. If we went back to the tax rates of the Clinton era, their would be no debt. Clinton created 23 million jobs and paid on the debt. . .we had a surplus, until "W" got in and took care of his "fat cats" and oil companies and put us into two expensive wars. Remember when Iraqi oil was going to pay the cost, rfight, they are selling it to the Chinese and we fought and paid for their "right" to do so!

Let me help you. He said the repubs are just as much fault as Obama is. Probably even more so.

Clinton HAD us on the right track. Its been a slippery slope ever since.

It amazes me that all the teapubs want us out of the wars. The same wars they supported just 3 years back.

How about we cut spending enough that we dont have to raise the debt ceiling

1 HUD cut its funding here why http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/...

2 food stamp cut them by half and start random drug testing

3 bring all our troops home in the middle east and every where else

The Pentagon accounts for most of our federal budget. Why not start the cuts there?

If we're cutting welfare and food stamps, why not corporate welfare and subsidies?

You can only rant and rave about what's in front of your face. What a shame you can't see the bigger picture and who is REALLY taking your money.
