Westlake Terrace housing project being replaced

Published: Tue, July 5, 2011 @ 1:51 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — The city’s Design Review Commission approved today the design and development of the $20 million to $22 million demolition and replacement of the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority’s Westlake Terrace housing project.

The plan is to replace Westlake Terrace with the 120-rental-unit Village at Arlington. The low-income project will be townhouses on a location between Madison Avenue, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Griffith Street.

Demolition is to begin in 60 to 75 days, said Clifford Scott, YMHA’s executive director. Demolition will take five to six months.

Construction on the new buildings will begin early next year and take about 18 months to complete, Scott said.

Anothetr waste of taxpayers money. Why do these people deserve all new houses with the economy in the dumps. I can't afford another house at this time let alone a new home.Tell them to get a job and join the real world.

$22 Million divided by 120 units = $183.333 per unit. That's pretty dang luxurious for "Low-Income" housing.

A year. Arson. Killings. Must be nice to have $183,000 home. And not pay for it. More like be paid to live there. Shakes head in disgust.

The messiah will probably be there to cut the ribbon on this socialistic plot of ground. The country is going down the toilet and we keep spending to keep these unproductive mallcontents in a house which they do not deserve. Give them the shovel and let them build their own damn hut to live in. Maybe then they would appreciate what they have and take care of it.

It's amazing.. Westlake was built for WORKING CLASS people. It was ok for them but not OK for our NON WORKING individuals. I may be askew on my history but they were built by the WPA weren't they? WOW built by people needing help who were willing to work for it.. They were built virtually indestructable and have withstood time. Why do we want to give NEW, built by today type standards town houses worth more than my home, (AND I WORK) for a living. to these people (term "people" used loosly). I just don't understand... I guess we should all quit working, go on WELFARE and let the jobs go overseas.. Then we can all have new homes.
