Lock P. Beachum Sr. will serve as Youngstown Board of Education president this year.
Michael Murphy, chairman of the business committee in 2010, was elected school board vice president.
Beachum, the board’s senior member, had been the board’s vice president in 2010.
Beachum and Murphy were chosen by the board during its Tuesday night reorganization session.
Beachum has served on the Youngstown board for 13 years and has had various positions including president, liaison to the city of Youngstown and chairman of various committees including finance, legislative and curriculum. He also is a retired city school administrator.
Last year he was re-elected to a one-year term as chairman of the national Council of Urban Boards of Education. Beachum has served as chairman of the council since April 2009 and is an ex-officio voting member of the National School Boards Association’s board of directors. The council is the only national membership organization governed solely by urban school board members and dedicated to the needs and interests of urban school boards.
Murphy is in his first term on the board. He has said one thing he’d like to do this year is meet with other area school districts to learn if they can buy items as a group.
