GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (AP) — Police say two officers fatally shot an armed man who was causing a disturbance at a gas station convenience store in the Cleveland suburb of Garfield Heights.
The Cuyahoga County coroner’s office identifies the man as 50-year-old Sylvester Gavin. The office did not release his hometown.
The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reports store employees called police Friday evening, saying a man was stealing items and was drinking alcohol.
Capt. Robert Sackett tells the newspaper the man had multiple weapons, including a pole carried on his back and a weapon he waved that was similar to a billy club.
Police say the man put down the club at their request but then grabbed it and lunged at the approaching officers, who fired shots at him. The officers’ names were not released.

Wow! Guy has a "pole" and they shoot him? Why not use the stun gun?
Yes, they should have waited to see exactly how severe the officers were injured by the charging pole before deciding which level of force to use. GET REAL!
Two uniformed police officers pointing guns at you, telling you to drop whatever it is in your hands and YOU CHOOSE to grab it again and charge them?? Easy decision there. If I am that officer, I am going to make sure my partner and I are alive to go home to our families.
Good job Garfield Heights PD!!
