YOUNGSTOWN

Members of the Junior League of Youngstown have become involved in a teaching program spearheaded by Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley.

Junior Achievement put together a package of materials, trained the volunteers and assigned them to teaching five courses in one morning.

The league members then travel to local schools where they teach life lessons. At Taft Elementary School they are helping second graders understand what it means to operate as a community.

Anna Sexton Aey, league president and one of the volunteers who participated in the Junior League’s Done-in-a-Day project of teaching at a local school, says members are committed to the mission of building better communities and are following through on a personal level.

The league, which is celebrating its 81st anniversary, recently kicked off its membership drive for 2011-2012 at Ballet Western Reserve. For the past 80 years the Junior League has been serving Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley and has remained committed to its mission of promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

The league has compiled the following calendar of events:

Feb. 15 — Provisional training/Kids in the Kitchen planning.

March 1 — JLY board of directors meeting.

March 6 — Done-in-a-Day opportunity/ “Dress for Success.”

March 8 — General membership meeting and Second Harvest Food Bank.
