After the Canfield boys basketball team beat rival Howland 60-55 on Feb. 4, the students celebrated by dancing the night away at the school’s final Sock Hop of the year.

The dance was staged in the high school cafeteria until 10:30 p.m. and was sponsored by the school’s Y-Teens club. Clubs can volunteer to sponsor the Sock Hops by paying for the DJ and then keeping whatever money is made from the $3 admission fees.

“It’s just something fun that they do for the kids. It gives them a place to go,” said teacher Nancy Dove, who helps organize many of the high school’s dances.

Far from being a new tradition, sock hops at Canfield go all the way back to the 1950s.

“I can remember going to sock hops when I was in high school,” said Cynthia Kooyman, a 1965 graduate of Canfield.

“Many schools aren’t able to have sock hops anymore because of issues they have had with students. Luckily for Canfield, “We’ve been fortunate so far not to have had any trouble,” said Dove.
