The Victorian Players board of directors on Thursday named J.E. Ballantyne Jr. interim managing director of the theater.
Ballantyne will fill the shoes left by Marilyn Higgins, who died of cancer Sunday. Higgins held the post for eight years.
The board will begin discussions in January on naming a permanent replacement, according to a news release.
Ballantyne, a local playwright and director, handled marketing for the theater for several years through his company, J&B Theatrical Promotions.
He also presented several special-event productions at the theater over the years, most recently the Holocaust drama “A Light in the Darkness” in October.
Ballantyne, who has worked in every phase of theater over the past 48 years, said the Vic will continue in the direction set by Higgins.
“Marilyn and I had discussed many things which she wanted to do,” he said. “We hope to be able to honor her and follow through with her hopes and dreams for the continued growth of the Victorian.”
