Between 100 and 120 Sears, Kmart stores to close nationwide

Published: Tue, December 27, 2011 @ 10:58 a.m.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sears Holdings Corp. plans to close between 100 and 120 Sears and Kmart stores after poor sales during the holidays, the most crucial time of year for retailers.

The closings are the latest and most visible in a long series of moves to try to fix a retailer that has struggled with falling sales and shabby stores.

In an internal memo today to employees, CEO and President Lou D’Ambrosio said that the retailer had not “generated the results we were seeking during the holiday.”

Sears Holdings Corp. said it has yet to determine which stores will close but said it will post on http://www.searsmedia.com when a final list is compiled. Sears would not discuss how many, if any, jobs would be cut.

The company has more than 4,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada.

As Rainman said, K-Mart sucks.

Frankly, I'm totally amazed that they're still in business. They really stuck it to their suppliers when they filed for bankruptcy, then magically had enough money to buy Sears.

It's a horribly run company that just needs to go away. Hopefully they'll spin Sears back off and let somebody competent run it. I stopped buying from Sears when they stopped honoring warranties on their products.

Great...I love K-Mart. You can find what you need and the store is always clean. Boardman Wal-Mart is filthy and disgusting. I go to Wal-Mart in Pa. At least there, I'm not terrified someone will steal my purse. If you get what I mean............

Sears was doing OK until the Kmart takeover and Eddie Lampert entered the picture. Since then, they have a horrible track record of not honoring their warranties. Sears did it to me twice, but I can tell you it won't happen a third time. I won't ever buy an expensive item at Sears ever again.

And this is the company that Kasich wants to lure to Ohio with $400 million in incentives! They go belly up and then who's left holding the bag when that happens?
