Austintown police investigating shooting of Poland man

Published: Tue, December 27, 2011 @ 1:43 p.m.

AUSTINTOWN — A 25-year-old Poland man told police he was trying to get his wife an iced coffee when he was shot.

The victim told police he was eastbound on Kirk Road from South Raccoon Road at 1:45 a.m. Saturday when he heard a “pop” near Meridian Road.

At first, he told police he thought someone threw a rock from a silver Ford Taurus that had pulled beside him in the turning lane, but then realized he had been shot in the leg, he told police.

The victim saw the Taurus turn north on one of the streets west of Meridian Road before he went to Akron Children’s Hospital of Mahoning Valley in Boardman. He was later transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Police noted a bullet hole in the driver’s door in the victim’s Dodge pickup truck.

there's probably more to the story here. my guess would be he was at privilege niteclub and got in a fight and that person followed him and shot him. just a guess though.

Hmm...from Poland, in Austintown at 1:45am seeking iced coffee. No places in Boardman or Poland where that could be purchased? Yeah, jrolley325 I'd have to agree with you.

If you believe his "ice coffee for wife" story, I have a bridge over the Mahoning River that I would love to sell you!

Iced coffee, huh? Only place remotely in that area that would sell iced coffee are McDonald's, Dairy Queen, and maybe Speedway. And I'm pretty confident that at least 2 of those 3 establishments were closed by 1:45a on Christmas Eve/Christmas early morning.

I agree, counterpoints and everyone else. Christmas Eve, 20 minutes from home, getting an iced coffee? Lets see, if EVERYWHERE in Poland is closed, wouldn't 224 in Boardman be the next option? Austintown for Iced Coffee? Iced Coffee? (Insert Jim Mora here....Playofffs? PLAYOFFS? Are you kidding me?) And the funny thing is, they actually reported this bogus story. I am going to get up from this desk and go to Toledo to get a pizza. Bye all.

snydro0108... did it ever occur to you that he was driving BACK to Poland from somewhere.... perhaps visiting his wife's family for the holidays.... and stopped on the way home to get an iced coffee? for example...if your hungry and you want to stop and get food , do you pass 5 McDonald's to go to the one near your house of do you stop at the first one you see? especially at that hour when you know things are closing. And besides there are no fast food places in Poland.

Esco, yes, that could be a possibility. Boardman is definitely closer to Poland than Austintown though... but I hope none of us are dumb enough to believe that he just drove to Austintown for some coffee. Surely he was in Austintown for something more involved than coffee.

But, if Vindy went as far as disclosing the "iced coffee" detail (which is MINISCULE), then why wouldn't they disclose the fact that the man was on his way home from visiting family, if he was? Why wouldn't they report, "A 25-year-old Poland man told police he was driving home from visiting with his family when he was shot?" The man's situation would seem much more legitimate that way; it seems much less "fishy."

I don't know. You probably don't know. And know one else posting probably knows. Bottom line is Vindy only gives you half the story anyway and a lot of times, their "facts" are not factual. So... Vindy has either made this man look like an idiot or the writer of this story one.
