Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
The holiday of Kwanzaa, a weeklong celebration of African-American culture and heritage, begins Monday night with an event at a city church.
An event observing Umoja, which means unity — one of the seven core principles of Kwanzaa — takes place at 7 p.m. Monday at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St.
The program will feature The Harambee Youth Organization and will include music, dancing, cultural expression and black vendors.
Maulana Karenga is credited with creating Kwanzaa, which was first celebrated on Dec. 26, 1966, in Los Angeles.

Wasn't Mr. Karenga a black panther who was convicted of sex crimes and kidnapping & torturing women with soldering irons in their mouths, feet placed in vices, chemicals placed in their mouths, water hoses forced down their throats, electrical cord beatings, and bludgeoning with heavy objects? Can't the black community find a better role model that a black separatist racist criminal and why would they legitimize this lowlife by emulating his invention of a black christmas?
Christmas is not a racial event; it is a spiritual world-wide event celebrated by all races, all countries, and all nationalities with the exception of muslims. Sad that these people cannot appreciate the beauty of Christmas without separatist racism.

Good observation however, this country allows for freedom of religion and if people want to follow Maulana Karenga, that is their choice.
The good news is that you & I do not have to follow him.
Just checking is STAN there .
I head he was
Christmas is meant to honor the birth of Jesus Christ who came to earth to bring peace and save all races and people.
Karenga was a Marxist Black Panther Party member who spent plenty of time in prison and hated what the USA stands for. Kwanzaa is a made up African Holiday that should best be celebrated there except it's not even know there. Once again the black community gets it wrong.
I guess it's Festivous for the rest of us. Please give me a break.
Every holiday is a made up holiday. Muslims, Shintos, Jews, and Hindu don't give a crap about Cristmas.. My Jehovah's Witness family members don't celebrate Christmas at all. I guess that means that they have declared war on Xmas, a made up holiday.
Just a racist thing. No ands, buts or ifs about it.
LOL
Every year the mention of Kwanzaa brings out the sheet covered (in this case computer hidden) racist from around the Valley.
The irony is that they all profess a love of Christmas, our lord Jesus Christ and the tolerance that he taught, then turn around in the next breath and call blacks every vile thing they can bring forth using limited vocabulary.
Trying to explain anything to these people is like teaching high math to a jackass, but I will say this — no one is following Karenga he was human and subject to error. What people are embracing during Kwanzaa are the principles it teaches.
If you stop swilling beer and scratching yourself long enough to read what the principles are, not even the most cynical, inbred, hilljack, bigot could disagree with those.
BTW most people who celebrate Kwanzaa are Christians who ALSO celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas.
BROTHALOVE
LMAO
"Every year the mention of Kwanzaa brings out the sheet covered (in this case computer hidden) racist from around the Valley. "
Here we go, everyone is a racist for talking about a made up holiday FOR the blacks by a quack who is STILL in the Black Panthers and still part of US and not to mention his felony convictions for assault and false imprisonment. Horrible the things he did to those women.
And you can honestly say because you disagree with this stupid holiday, Your a RACIST? Really?
Because someone disagrees with something that does not make them a Racist! smh at such stupidity.
The seven principles of Kwanzaa
Unity
Self-Determination
Work and Responsibility
Cooperative Economics
Purpose
Creativity
Faith
Now lets see from today to January 1st the number of shootings, robberies, etc what happens. Lets see if the violence stops for a week. How much I would like to see it happen, I just don't see it happening.
