Kelly Pavlik busted for OVI after ATV accident

Former middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik bonded out of the Mahoning County jail overnight, facing charges of operating a vehicle while impaired, failure to control and leaving the scene of an accident.

Pavlik, 29, of Canfield, was arrested Wednesday night at his Sugarbush Drive home following an ATV accident. Police say Pavlik smelled of alcohol and was belligerent toward officers investigating the accident. He hit a neighbor’s lamp post, police said.

Police reports say additional charges may be filed.

The city native and former middleweight boxing champion ended the year with an announcement that he would leave long-time trainer Jack Loew.

His year started fresh out of a stint in the Betty Ford Clinic for alcohol rehabilitation.

In between, Pavlik withdrew last August from a Covelli Centre bout with Darryl Cunningham, citing the $1.35 million purse as too low.

The Cunningham fight was to be a warmup for Pavlik in anticipation of a super middleweight championship clash against Lucian Bute.
