Kelly Pavlik busted for OVI after ATV accident

CANFIELD

Former middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik bonded out of the Mahoning County jail overnight, facing charges of operating a vehicle while impaired, failure to control and leaving the scene of an accident.

Pavlik, 29, of Canfield, was arrested Wednesday night at his Sugarbush Drive home following an ATV accident. Police say Pavlik smelled of alcohol and was belligerent toward officers investigating the accident. He hit a neighbor’s lamp post, police said.

Police reports say additional charges may be filed.

The city native and former middleweight boxing champion ended the year with an announcement that he would leave long-time trainer Jack Loew.

His year started fresh out of a stint in the Betty Ford Clinic for alcohol rehabilitation.

In between, Pavlik withdrew last August from a Covelli Centre bout with Darryl Cunningham, citing the $1.35 million purse as too low.

The Cunningham fight was to be a warmup for Pavlik in anticipation of a super middleweight championship clash against Lucian Bute.

What a sad story...I would think he will be happy to fight for a purse of $135 pretty soon. This kid is his own worst enemy!

I guess he showed everybody that working for zero dollars and hour is better than $1.35 million dollars an hour. What a schmuck!

I hope Kelly can put it all together and capture another Championship.... He did well in his fighting quest...

Hopefully he get a new manager and moves forward...

and after all how much is a lamp post... and if he hit it on an ATV... he was on Private property... off the limits of the highway... I am sure he will man up and pay for the lamp post...

But a DUI... you have to be kidding me... on private property... sounds like a witch hunt to me....

have a good day

and on another note...

IF a prominate attorney (guess who) can have a wreck in downtown Youngstown and be so upset he had to go to a bar and have a few drinks to calm down... and when the police found him he was over the limit...

Well Kelly was ridding his ATV and hit a lamp post and was so upset... from damaging his neighbor post he had to go home and have a few beers to calm down.. does that make him bad????

have a good day....

Im pretty sure you can be drunk and damage your own property all you want. It becomes criminal when you a. do it to another persons property, b. are doing it on a vechicle, c. doing it drunk on a vechicle, d. leave the scene. Which I would imagine the neighbor mustve not been happy about. They prob want him out of the neighborhood anyway. ATVs at night would be annoying I would think.

"....from damaging his neighbor post he had to go home and have a few beers to calm down.. does that make him bad????"

Really??? Hes a alcoholic, he shouldn't even have ONE beer. He admitted his drinking was bad, he went to the Betty Ford clinic, until he admits that he is a alcoholic and treats sobriety as his main goal in life, he will be nothing but a washed up bum, sitting in a dive bar and reminiscing about what could have been. The dude needs help but people like you are the ones that only care about Kelly as a fighter instead of Kelly as a person.

God forgive me for judging someone but he does not need any more rounds in the ring he needs 12 steps in the AA program. Evidently the Betty Ford clinic was not very effective.

Lifes2Short; I agree with you 100%. I am a recovering alcoholic / addict. Recovering can only start if you admit to Step 1 in a 12-Step program, attend meetings, get a sponsor, change your habits (even friends, in some cases), re-dedicate yourself, etc. Going to rehab to get clean is only the beginning. It is a lifelong committment. I went to rehab for 90-days, but I am still a nomad on a journey of sobriety. Kelly: Make it happen.

I guess it's considered news because there has been so much denial..... denial from Kelly, his family, his "camp", etc. Well, reality now begins to set in and hopefully, none too late!

I am sure he wouldn't have been taken to jail if he wasn't acting like a drunken idiot. Beligerance doesn't help matters, especially at 11pm at night. Just listen to the police and quit trying to be a badass. I am glad he got taken to jail. One could only hope the judge makes it mandatory for this bum to get some medical assistance so I don't have to read the "Breaking Kelly Pavlik" news. He has his own freakin section on vindy.com and that is where this story belongs!

What a bum! He had the world in his hands and he threw it all away for alcohol. Yes, I know it is a disease, but if he wanted to he could overcome it. My father is a recovering alcoholic who hasn't touched a drink since 4/1/1980, and he didn't have nearly as much going for him as Kelly. It is such a shame to see him destroy himself like this. He once represented Youngstown in a positive light, now he just makes it look bad like most everything else in the area.

INTEL, you are a riot, naive but a riot. Obviously your name here is not short for intelligent!!!

ps: Jack Lowe could of gone out and had the homeowner move that light post before the incident occurred so maybe it is Jack's fault!
