Improvements continue at WRTA bus station downtown

Improvements at Federal Station continue, even as the new concrete on the east parking lot is tested for its durability.

The Western Reserve Transit Authority began a repaving project of the Federal Station parking lot, plaza and decorative concrete dividers earlier this year, and work was completed in June.

The entire paving project cost about $660,000, said Michael Fagan of Olsavsky Jaminet Architects of Youngstown, which does design work for WRTA. Fagan said the east parking lot is still blocked from buses.

“We saw imperfections and we weren’t entirely happy with it,” Fagan said.

Those imperfections are not cracks, but light marks on the surface of the concrete, he said.

Jim Santini Builder Inc. did the paving, and the company is working with WRTA, Fagan said.

$660,000? Cry that everyone and everything is broke in Mahoning County, but throw money at WRTA. It's like the twilight zone around here -- empty, huge busses crisscrossing each other with MAYBE one person on them besides the driver. If it wasn't such a waste of money, it would be funny.

As one of the invisible people who depend on the WRTA bus system as my main source of transportation, I invite you to come downtown to the bus station. I hear that crowds of people gather up there about 10 after the hour several times a day just to wave at the drivers as those empty buses pull out.

Sorry for being sarcastic, but the buses I ride are rarely empty. I've been on the Market St bus when every seat was filled. Of course, it depends on the time of day as some people ride the bus to go to/from work or to go to places that keep normal business hours.

Public transportation plays a vital role in our economy as the ALEC controlled congress turns us into a third world nation. As wages drop to min. wage, many people will have to make harsh decisions - owning and operating a motor vehicle is equivalent to the cost of renting an apartment. Some people will not be able to afford both.
