YSU faculty votes to strike

Published: Thu, August 25, 2011 @ 7:27 p.m.

Youngstown State University’s faculty union will hit the picket line Friday morning, having rejected the university’s last, best offer this evening.

The union began voting about 4 p.m. and it was announced just before 7:30 p.m. that a strike will begin Friday. Classes were scheduled to start on Monday.

The admin. is full of crap. They were the ones who refused to take the pay cuts when the fact finder report was voted on. They're are doing everything with in their power to make the faculty look greedy and unfair. The faculty does not want a strike they want classes to start on Monday. It is the administration's fault for this strike its the only leverage the faculty has against them.

Maybe they should start firing the administration. That should free up all the funds necessary to pay the faculty who actually teach the classes. There's an idea.

Of course the administration doesn't want to take a pay cut from their huge salaries. They think it should only be the little guy that takes the concession.

The harm is to the students. I feel for them.

Dear YSU Faculty Union,
First, I would just like to say good job to all of you on losing all of your respect you have "worked so hard to obtain". Your fellow colleges, who are not in the union, students, and other individuals in the city /surrounding area of Youngstown, Ohio, are appalled by your actions in going on strike. I know I have zero respect/tolerance for selfish, egocentric people such as yourselves. The individuals who voted for this unnecessary strike are obviously blinded by greed and cannot see that students out number faculty members immensely, and that WE, the students, are now the voice. This strike is about money. What about the students who now have to pay full tuition because of the block currently held on financial aid? Some students rely on the money given to them by the state to live off during the school year. Do you realize that YSU will not be getting the tuition money from the majority of the student body because we simply do not have the money to pay it otherwise without the help of financial aid? This will only put YSU into deeper hole than it is supposedly already in. Lastly, I, along with hundreds of there students, would be caught dead in any class room during any type of break because of this parsimonious strike. In other words if the YSU faculty union has any common sense they will call this strike off.
Sincerally yours, one pissed off YSU student

I have two kids signed up to attend YSU this semester and I support the faculty 100% The administration looks bad here to anyone paying attention to this issue, not the union. What do they want- everyone to work for a pittance in this life? I'm proud of this faculty for not accepting this insult disguised as a "last, best, offer."
