Published: Mon, August 15, 2011 @ 12:12 p.m.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that landed a 20-year-old Campbell man in the hospital with a gunshot wound in his left leg. Police arrived at the Coconut Grove, 3229 South Ave., at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday after reports of gunfire. Records state that officers were greeted by a hostile crowd, and individuals in the crowd said about 10 rounds from two different types of guns were fired from the corner of Lucius and Detroit avenues. The injured man was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he was listed in stable condition.

Hopefully now that we finally have a new Mayor he will realize that we need incresaed spending and support of the Youngstown Police Department and the jails... We have already tried assiting and rehabing. Now it's time to rot in jail. If you do the crime you must do the time!! It's nothing more then a joke now. They all know they will just get off and released from jail due to over crowding. We need increased police patrols and funding to hire more officers to patrol the streets!

I was at the scene of this moments after it happened. (I heard the shots and called it in also) You can have a cop on every corner. It won't stop the nonsense
It needs to start at home. If parents are made more accountable for their childrens actions and are more involved in their lives-we as a community would not be having this problem.

this is exactly why there are businesses boarded up all down south ave. And the exact reason we moved our business out of the city! Very sad but it's just not safe to even drive on the south side. Need more patrols on that street, enforce loitering and keep the thugs confined to their homes so that the city can thrive again. A crowd of people hanging out on the streets is poison and will eventually end up causing trouble..

@Carl You are right these social welfare programs failed, due to Republicans throwing temper tantrums in Washington and refusing to fully fund these programs or allow them to adjust for inflation. Thus we need to revise the tax code from its current leviathon status to a simple flat income tax of 9% on all income over $20,000 per individual with no deductions!

Does every problem in Youngstown have to be settled with a gun?

We must show tolerance toward the lifestyles of others . Who are we to judge how they express themselves ?

If we eliminate the small stuff the the larger crimes will start to go away. More then likely the gunmen already has some type of record. If we would have kept him in jail he wouldn't of been able to do this. All of the juviniles that are commiting robberies and petty crimes are doing nothing but growning into older more experienced criminals. Make a example out of them. If enough young men and women are forced to pay the price for their crimes as well as the parents that have no control held responsible I would be that at some point someone is going to take notice that they are not and will not get away it it. No more excuses...I don't care how down and out and poor you are there is NO EXCUSE to commit a crime. We all have family memebers that have come into this country with a lot less other the pride and they worked hard and prospered with out taking what they wanted unlawfully.

What is this Coconut Place? A watering hole? Has to be.

Yeah more gun violence, from some young punk without a legal permit to be totting such. Even if he had a permit...

Let me guess, the perp is black, 13-30, brown eyes, black hair, oversized clothing. Blah blah blah.

He was raised in a single mother household, dropped out of school, has children and likely doesn't support them.

That's just because it's the Southside of Ytown. That's the formula.

Sad thing is this has been like this at least since the 1990's (early) when that area had the highest concentration of single mother households in all of Ohio.

Not that a single mother can't raise children. But in that hell hole of an environment, almost impossible to raise anything.

Yeah it's a social welfare enabling this blight. It's trendy to have 3 dead beat fathers and let the government pay all your bills.

Time to start cutting these programs off. Like unemployment, if you haven't paid in, you shouldn't be getting money out.

Liberals will complain, oh the children. Hey that's not my fault, talk to their mama and daddy about their choices. Maybe these mothers will pick someone to shack up with that actually works and participates? Maybe these folks will live together generationally. They won't cease to exist or be more tortured. Instead, that hard love will inflict reality and a need for them to better deal with reality.

Something needs to happen. Forced weekly community service doing actual work for all welfare hounds. No air conditioning in ghetto'ville. No free cell phones. No open ended food cards (blocks of cheese and pot luck, hell maybe even just have to show up at food kitchens to be fed).

Coconut Grove! 40 years ago, this corner was a happening place. The Grove, the Sundown, Drift Inn, Johnny Knapp's Southside Civics, the Splendid. What an absolute sin what my old neighborhood has become, an effin' shooting gallery!
