Malkin scores in Pens’ victory
Evgeni Malkin scored for Pittsburgh and the Penguins beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 Tuesday night.
Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson and Mark Letestu also had goals for Pittsburgh, and Paul Martin had two assists. Kyle Beach scored for Chicago, which fell to 1-3 in the preseason. The Penguins are 4-0.
The game matched the past two Stanley Cup champions — but the lineups did not. Malkin played, but fellow Penguins stars Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury and Brooks Orpik were among the scratches. Chicago chose not to dress, among others, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Marian Hossa and Marty Turco.
Both of the Penguins’ third-period goals went in off of Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook.
Blue Jackets 3, Wild 2, SO
Nikita Filatov scored in regulation and the shootout, and David Leneveu stopped the last two Wild shooters to rally Columbus.
The Blue Jackets (2-3), who trailed 2-0, got even on Nick Holden’s point shot through traffic midway through the third period. Filatov scored a power-play goal from the left circle earlier in the third.
Kristian Huselius also tallied in the shootout, and Anton Stralman added two assists in regulation for Columbus. Mathieu Garon played the first 30 minutes, allowing one goal on 15 shots.
Matt Cullen and Eric Nystrom scored in the second period for the Wild (0-3-2). Niklas Backstrom went the distance in goal, making 31 saves.
Devils 3, Flyers 2
Ilya Kovalchuk scored the go-ahead goal with 2:19 remaining for New Jersey.
Adam Mair and Travis Zajac also scored for the Devils, who had dropped three in a row — all in overtime or shootouts. They appeared headed for extra time again until Kovalchuk scored his third goal in three games.
