Allegiant adds flights to Tampa

Published: Tue, September 21, 2010 @ 11:51 a.m.

VIENNA—Allegiant Airlines, the only carrier currently serving the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, announced this morning that it will launch non-stop service from Youngstown to Tampa, Fla., beginning Nov. 17. The airline is offering a special low introductory one-way fare of $64.99, which must be purchased by October 12 but can be used for travel through March 8, 2011.

An Allegiant spokeswoman said the company decided to add to its local service because of “the tremendous support given to us by the Youngstown community.” Allegiant has provided flights to Orlando, Fla., from the airport since 2006 and began seasonal flights to Myrtle Beach, S.C. earlier this year.

This headline and story is misleading. The service is not to the city of Tampa at all. The service goes to the St. Petersburg/Clearwater international airport which is on the other side of Tampa Bay. Allegiant's website also does not say "Tampa" -- it says "Tampa Bay". I hope readers do not think they will be flying to Tampa International which is 11 miles away from St. Pete/Clearwater international. I think you need to update this story.

When Allegiant first started flying from Youngstown, the service was to Orlando-Sanord Airport and it was advertised as Orlando and it was very successful. Now it does fly into Orlando International and still does very well.

Nothing different in this case, perhaps by adding the word Bay it would be a bit more accurate though. However PIE is more convenient for those that live in Clearwater and closer to the coastline than TPA.

This is great news for my family. I have asked about this service for 2 or 3 years now. We can now fly
from St. Pete to Youngstown, instead of driving to Pittsburgh, Akron/Canton, or Cleveland. Thanks Allegiant

St. Pete-Clearwater Airport is so much more convenient to fly into. You don't have to fight the Tampa traffic trying to get onto 275N or the Courtney Campbell Causeway (Rte 60). Instead you just hop onto the Bayside Bridge (yards from the airport) and you will be on Rte 60 heading to Clearwater Beach in minutes . Clearwater Beach is only 30 minutes away. If someone wants to go to Tampa from Clwr.-St. Pete, it is also convenient over the Howard Franklin Bridge. For beachgoers, St. Pete-Clwr. is much more convenient.
