Youngstown school board fills last 2 principal posts

Published: Tue, September 14, 2010 @ 9:00 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Principals are now in place at all the city schools.

The school board chose an educator from Arkansas and one from Cleveland to lead Paul C. Bunn Elementary and Chaney High schools, respectively. Substitute principals had been filling in those positions since the beginning of the school year.

The votes came at a school board meeting tonight.

Erik Thorson, who has served as a principal in Cleveland schools, was named Chaney principal by a unanimous board vote. The annual pay for the job is $81,683, but because he is starting after the beginnng of the school year, Thorson will earn $70,120 this year.

The board, in a 5-2 vote, selected Artemus D. Scissum, an educator from Arkansas, as principal at Bunn. The annual rate for the job is $65,237, but since Scissum is starting after the beginning of the school year, he’ll earn $57,330 this year.

Can the mess be cleaned up the board created? Its not like they didn't know all summer Chaney needed a principal. Perhaps the better question is why is Wendy Webb punishing the west side of Youngstown by not hiring someone to have the school ready for the start of the year? the Vindy wouldn't ask those hard questions! lets blame the union for all the districts problems. FACT IS the teachers haven't had a raise in 7 years and we even saved the district money by giving back benefits. what have they done for the kids? Allowed school to open to disorder on the west side. 40 kids in one class while other have five. But everything is the teacher fault.

I think Richard Atkinson should resign from the School Board as well as MYCAP Board of Directors. Clearly he isnt fit to serve.

Is this really this cat's name?

Artemus D. Scissum?

This sounds like some name that Johnny Carson would have for one of his sketch players!

Art Fern, Floyd R.Turbo, Aunt Blabby, Artemus D. Scissum!

Good money thrown after bad - the Youngstown schools are a total academic and financial failure. Until the Youngstown parents get involved in the educational process, and develop some family moral values for the school system instead of using it as a free meal and babysitting provider, it just doesn't matter who is in charge.
