  Chevy Cruze launch

LORDSTOWN — Recapping our earlier live Twitter feeds at @Vindicator, here are some highlights of today's Chevrolet Cruze launch at the GM Lordstown facility:

Led by the Boardman High School Marching Band, Gov. Ted Strickland rode into the launch ceremony in the first Cruze. He told the hundreds in attendance: "I learned a long, long time ago that you can never count out the Mahoning Valley. The only thing stronger than Valley steel are Valley people."

Addressing critics of Ohio's manufacturing future, Strickland said: "I have four words for them: Look at this car!"

GM North America President Mark Reuss told those gathered: "The rebirth of the American economy starts right here at Lordstown."

U.S. Sen Sen. Sherrod Brown added, "Every time someone buys a Cruze it means jobs for the Mahoning Valley; jobs for northern Ohio." He was followed by U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan who proclaimed: "We announce to the world here today: The Mahoning Valley is back."

Local 1112 President Jim Graham summed up the event saying, "We will compete with anything, anything the Asian market throws at us and we will beat them." Added Local 1714 President Dave Green: "We're gonna make you proud you supported us."

Ironic that the three politicians representing the largest job losses in Ohio's history, Ted Strickland, Tim Ryan, & Sherrod Brown were touting that the Valley is back. These same politicians have allowed the loss of pensions of thousands of Delphi retirees to go unpaid by GM, and are allowing the resulting loss of $58 million annually to the Valley. Until this injustice is fixed, no one should support GM's unethical decision, and everyone should campaign to defeat these three stooges in November.

fair and equal, you amaze me. Strickland, Brown, and Ryan are the ones that were fighting the hardest for your "promised benefits". Senator Brown sat with Obama to help this situation with no luck. Do you think these guys are supper hero's or what. Ohio is one of the nations job growth states, and you would support kasich or portman, the very same people that shipped our jobs overseas. you are pathetic, an embarrassment to all.

and you want to be treated like the "union" folks, how much did you pay in union dues? where were you when the "union" folks were on strike. did you enjoy the benefits when the "union" won them? why didn't you give those bonus' back? your pension will NEVER be restored. you will live out your life a sour grape. pathetic.

Remember Fair said he bought a jap crap . So he will not support his community or neighbors He did not work for GM he worked for Delphi , he got his pension, and no GM retirees get their health care from GM they have there own trust fund. . He did not support the Union. He was only out for his self . He was given the chance to join and help the UAW fight for what they got . He was part of the group that got matching 401s.
He got two times the health care that that workers got .Now he would like us to boycott GM and hurt more workers . ALL I can say is NO , H&LL NO. And I do not work for GM .

Strickland, Brown, and Ryan are the three incumbents that have produced NO RESULTS in a 1.5 YEARS! And to "top it off", they happen to be part of the same political party as the one man who can change this in a heartbeat, Barrack Obama. So, paying union dues BUYS you being treated fairly by an unethical company? Is that what you are saying?

Union strike, or America's boycott. No difference. Has nothing to do with not supporting your community. It has everything to do with standing up against what is wrong.

Fairandequal: Obviously you have some sort of problem with GM. However, if you buy foriegn cars, especially japanese, you are not exactly standing up for what is right. You are buying cars off the people who attacked us. Are you going to buy Afghani cars next? That'll show those jerks at GM, Huh? At least buy a Ford.

Steelhead - Freeatlast said that I bought a jap crap, I DIDN'T. You are right, a Ford is a good choice.

So, paying union dues BUYS you being treated fairly. NO IT WILL NOT but sometime it protects you where A&& kissing will not . And most if you guys had a choice to stay with GM or go with Delphi. I have two sons and a daughter who worked for Gm and Delphi both hourly and salary . Plus I have many friends you work or did work at Delphi. A lot who have also retried . Plus you did say you bought your last American car a few comments ago ( last I heard Ford was still American and UAW) . I know it is hard to lose what you thought you had . But why you want to hurt your neighbors goes over my head . From what I hear the UAW is working to get you guys something but you type of comments is making it hard .

Fairandequal: If you don't buy foreign cars, I apologize. It sucks to have your pension taken away, to put it lightly. Hopefully I can count on your support as the gov't (and DeSouza) tries to take mine. I just don't see the wisdom in wanting to destroy a company that provides so many badly needed jobs. You aren't the first guy to get screwed by a combination of industry and government, and unfortunately won't be the last. They should be ashamed, but I am sure they aren't.

No retiree should be denied their pension, particularly after working an entire career. I hope you don't lose yours. We don't want GM to be destoryed. We want them pay us our pensions, the same way as they are paying ALL others. If the boycott hurts them (just as a union strike would), they are hurting themselves by their own mistaken judgement.
