The workers at the General Motors Lordstown complex have ramped up production on the Chevrolet Cruze in anticipation of tomorrow’s high-profile launch.
“Everything is set,” said plant manager Bob Parcell. “All systems are go.”
Cruze production has progressed slowly, as the plant takes pains to perfect GM’s new compact car. The company is relying on the Cruze to reverse its historically lackluster performance in the small-car segment and rebuild the Chevrolet brand.
“We want to make sure it’s a perfect car,” Parcell said. “We have all of the makings of a home run.”
As evidence of the car’s importance, state officials and company executives will be at the Lordstown complex for the official launch of the Cruze on Wednesday morning.
President Barack Obama, who is scheduled to be in Northeast Ohio Wednesday, is reportedly considering attending the event. His speech in Parma is scheduled 31/2 hours after the Cruze launch begins.
Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, and Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland will headline the kickoff celebration, which starts at 10:30 a.m.
The launch is a celebration of “the resilience of the Mahoning Valley’s working men and women, who defied those critics that said Ohio manufacturing was dead,” Strickland said. “Ohio is only just getting started,” he added.
Leaders from the United Auto Workers Locals 1112 and 1714, as well as U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, and Lordstown Mayor Michael Chaffee, will also speak. Several other state and local officials, including U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, are slated to attend.
“This launch is a landmark moment for the state of Ohio, and a turning point for our country’s manufacturing sector as a whole,” Brown said.
The kickoff celebration, which is open to the public, will mark the departure of the first Cruze cars to Chevrolet dealerships across the country.
Chevrolet will roll out its Cruze advertising campaign this week, with television ads scheduled to hit airwaves today. The commercials feature actor Tim Allen, best known for the television series “Home Improvement,” as the new voice of Chevrolet.
The marketing campaign, which will include a large social-media component, is set to ramp up later this fall.

Looks like just another non-descript slug-mobile like every other piece of Jap Junk- styling on the road.
Last car made that I wanted was the 1968 Dodge Charger RT with the 440 and 4 speed.
The Old Coot.
Good luck to GM and my union brothers. Hopefully, the Cruze will be huge success unlike the Vega, Cavalier, and Cobalt before them. The valley needs this economic private sector stimulus.
Good Luck it Looks great
20,000 Delphi Salaried retirees fight on for their earned pensions AND health care, all at the hands of UNETHICAL GENERAL MOTORS, Obama, and Valley incumbents. GM does not deserve your patronage. We urge ALL to BOYCOTT GM products, including the CRUZE, until this is resolved. GM & Obama think they can ignore this discrimination. It is costing THIS VALLEY's retirees immeasurably, and it is costing YOU. $58 MILLION dollars economic loss to the VALLEY that affects ALL in the Valley. GM brought this injustice on THEMSELVES! Don't buy their products until they do, and do NOT support the incumbents who haven't fixed it, Ted "Mr. Jobs" Strickland, Tim "All Talk" Ryan, Charlie "Who" Wilson, and Lee "Wannabe" Fisher.
I suppose YOU support the loss of your OWN pension & health care too. That's it support UNETHICAL GM, and you cut your own throat. GM is at the very heart of this injustice, and our local incumbents have ALLOWED it.
All you "supporters" will probably to stupid enough to cheer Obama again when he comes to the Valley again and tries to TWIST the truth about economic recovery in the Valley, and save the local incumbents butts. Tell him that you're happy to collecting your unemployment check, your $8/hr McDonald's check, or how happy you'll be when a measily 350 jobs come to V&M SOMEDAY at a cost of $250 million. WAKE UP. They aren't helping the Delphi reitrees, and they aren't helping YOU!
"President Barack Obama, who is scheduled to be in Northeast Ohio Wednesday, is reportedly considering attending the event." He might as well TRY to take credit for the launch of the Cruze, since he CAN'T take credit for any REAL job growth, just like his band of local puppets, Strickland, Ryan, Wilson, Fisher. Vote THEM OU in Novemebr!
mikeymike,
Do some research on the situation and you will see that the Delphi salaried employees are getting screwed! But, the UAW employees are getting taken care of. How's that hopey-change thing working out for you?
Research fact: Delphi moved most assets overseas to eliminate high legacy employee cost then went bankrupt (2005) to structure primarily overseas where most of their business in now located. Under the old Delphi web site it directly said as much. GM went bankrupt to eliminate cost as well. Delphi Union contracts were legally honored under the current bankruptcy laws while the salary employees had no legal written guarantee. Morally bankrupt yes; but completly legal under the laws that have been in place for many years. Have Congress change the bankruptcy laws if not happy. The PBGC is just following its charter of maximum payouts of which Delphi ranks the second highest take over in the history of PBGC behind United Airlines: If not happy have Congress change that program as well. Here is a money tax tip: health care can be deductable (anything over 7 1/2 percent of the AGI). I am not in the mood for a "Delphi Kettle Campaign".
Well, maybe the next model will be better -- 200+ HP, 40mpg, room for the whole family, solid as a tank (or you can choose the lighter, flying version), at $18K retail. That's what we'd see if we had had continuous improvement since 1968 or whenever. What I don't understand is how all that investment in CAD/CAM/CAE tools and R&D produced so little. I was hoping some of those 16 and 30 hour work-days by so many bright engineers since then might have raised the bar a bit.
But, the UAW employees are getting taken care of. And that shows that the union is bad ???? They took care of their workers was good as they could . I must be missing something .
Compman - You are incorrect. Under bankruptcy laws, ALL Union contracts are null & void. GM & Obama CHOSE to allow the UAW & IUE pensions to remain whole, NOT the bankruptcy laws. And GM CHOSE to allow the UAW to keep ALL their health care, not the bankruptcy laws, which allowed for the contracts to be null & void. We are only asking for EQUAL treatment, our EARNED pensions, just as the unions got theirs. And, we are asking that NO ONE buys products from a company that sponsers such unethical dsicrimination, until the discrimination ends. Allow it to happen, and YOUR pension will be next.
Freeatlast - NO ONE is saying that the unions are "bad" or that they don't deserve their earned pensions. All we are saying is that SO DO WE! Preferential treatment by a Corporation, and much worse, OUR Government cannot be condoned. The boycott of GM products is NO DIFFERENT than the strike that would have IMMEDIATELY taken place if this had happened to the UAW. So, don't blame the retirees, blame GM. GM did this to THEMSELVES, and they are hurting OUR community because of it to the tune of $58 MILLION per year. Buy NO GM, until the discrimination ends.
How do you expect those people to get pensions, retirement, healthcare if GM isn't turning a profit? Why would you boycott GM products? I know numerous GM employees who retired within the last 2 years and received everything as promised. You must have been burned and denied any financial backing due to your lackluster performance or failure to abide by company policy.
GM is a huge employer for our area, and produces a great quality product. Don't let these burn outs turn you away from driving GM vehicles produced by our proud, strong, and resilient neighbors.
FYI, The Delhpi Salaried retirees have been denied their pensions and healthcare, unlike ALL other retiree groups. Why would we boycott GM? To put economic pressure on them to solve this case of BLATANT DISCRIMINATION, that's why. The SAME as the strike would have done if this happened to the UAW. Buy that's different? I don't think so! I suppose you didn't know that the negative economic impact to OUR community due to GM's CHOICE is $58 MILLION/YR? And you want to support that?
Freeatlast You and all you buddies chose NOT to join the Union . You were given 3 or more chances to join and you would have had your own local not the one that the lowly workers were in . But you and your buddies said you were to good to join a union . Now you want the same treatment that union got . You are the ones that said the company( Delphi not GM you did not work for GM it the time ) will take care of us .You guys would set in your little cubicle and look down at noses at the workers . I know because I was there part of the time .
Free - You know NOT of what you speak. NO Salaried at Delphi had any opportunity to join a union. There were runblings about one, but unlike the hourly, Salaried would have been fired if they undertook a union organizing effort. Get the facts before you speak.
FAIR AND EQUAL BS you know what I say is true I was there . I know my facts . You guys went and hid under your desk and Kissed a&& . If you speak of something please speak the truth . If you ever want help PLEASE STOP Lying . We the UAW are trying to work something out ,But you guys can only put down the union and call for a boycott . I do not even see why we care but we do . You would be best to help out and not call for boycotts . REMMBER that is our income .
If the UAW is trying to "work something out", then why hasn't the media heard a word? Jim Graham said "we are 100% behind you". Then came the SILENCE! Buy NO GM, until this blatant discrimination ends! Answer this. Was OK when the UAW struck and hurt the local economy & businesses in the past for their OWN interests? The boycott is the SAME THING.
NO Delphi Salaried EVER had the option to join a union, not that they should have to for UNETHICAL GM to live up to its OBLIGATIONS.
Should we get you two a room?
