People are riding WRTA buses

It saddens me when an elect- ed official, such as John W. Smith, the mayor of Sebring, makes a statement that that is formulated within the context of political posturing, instead of an actual reality.

In his Aug. 25 letter to the editor, Smith observes that he has “yet to see a rider” on the WRTA buses that transverse the Boardman area. As an individual from suburban Austintown, who relies upon the WRTA system to commute back and forth from two part-time jobs, one located on the Youngstown State University Campus, and the other at Shops at Boardman Park, I can attest to a ridership that is quite substantial. These riders and I are among the greater numbers of individuals who take advantage of a continued expansion of bus routes that resulted from the passage of the WRTA levy in November of 2008.

If Mayor Smith might consider joining me on my daily commute, he might discover a reality that differs greatly from his aforementioned observation.

The route that goes through the green in Canfield is always empty. The bus doesn't even need to stop because no one is getting on.

I have yet to see any bus with more then a few people on it. Most times the buses are running empty. What a waste of taxpayer dollars the WRTA is.
