Elkton prison computer recycling program under scrutiny

Published: Fri, October 29, 2010 @ 5:43 a.m.

ELKTON

U.S. Rep Charlie Wilson, D-6th, wants to look at a prison program that may have exposed staff and prisoners to toxic materials.

Hillary Wicai Viers, Wilson’s spokeswoman, said Thursday, “Out of ongoing concern for both the guards and the prisoners, Congressman Wilson will be requesting a hearing on this matter from the House Judiciary Committee.”

But U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley said Thursday that a recycling program at the Federal Corrections Institute in Elkton has been closed but was not a danger.

Under the program, prisoners broke computers apart. The program began in 1997 and closed in 2009.

“There are no plans to reopen it,” Billingsley said.

But a report from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General indicated the computer-

recycling program had problems. Similar programs were run at other federal prisons.

I wonder which Mason Guard complained. It seems since that prison was built it's been nothing but whining and crying. And the funny thing most of those Mason boys and girls never worked in the Public Sector. But did work at the Columbiana County Jail where Suits were the common way of life at that Mason and Eastern Star joint! Just check the records!

I think just because your an inmate shouldnt mean that you can be exposed to harmful material while incarcerated, i hope all those prisoners sue the crap out of the goverment, we want to rehabilitate them not cause life long health problems for them, not to mention the guards and other workers there, folks need to think these programs through a bit more thourougly before subjecting people to harmful things

Elkton Family, We in Fla. do relate. For the record. The Toxic Heavy Metals E-waste Recycling Operations in Unicor did began in Marianna Fla. (1994 the birth place). The Marianna unicor cover up. Just because the Unicor factory has closed in your area (ours is still up and running) The damage is very much roaring its ugly head, sickness, death. It does not stop because they close the doors. The monster is very much alive. Just becuse a woman gives birth that does not mean the baby dies, prayerfully it lives on. Prison Leagal News in an article will explain. Prisoners and Staff exposed to Toxic Dust at Unicor. In the article the spokes person stated that they were in compliance, I beg to deffer with that person, AT the institution at the Marianna Prison I can honestly speak that they were not or no were near the OSHA guidelines, Approxiamantly some where in 2003 they started a little change, 1994-2003. Long time for the Toxic Heavy metal and radioactive Poisoning, Yes we had quite a bit of radioactive materal that came thru that had been stored and handled and dismantled. No storage or handling or protective signs were ever put in place in and around the radioactive material or other hazardous material. No protective breathing or clothing gear was ever offered or given to staff and for inmates NONE. What is so bad is Washington knew all along what was going on and that Unicor was negligent and non-careing of all workers staff and inmates. As long as the Moneys was rolling in, The Need for Geed. Fat Cats filling their own pockets. Now we come to the effects of the non-OSHA, Non Medical Non-Compliance Standards. The sick and dying and now the issues of the environmental sickness of our communities with in our County and State (Mr, Unicor) Not only bringing it home to our loved ones but now, the toxic contaminated changes to our environment, drinking water, air, and health or loved ones, waste-water,streams, emmissions ect. Yet no testing, There again its about the money, lying and covering up the truth. No measures of doing the right thing. Like taking the Toxic contaminated recycling out of the prison, and doing the right thing to help the families of the ones that has died or have become sick because of the lack and neglegience and the need for greed that is on the part of Unicor E-Waste Recycling. How the Unicor Agency is so good at reflecting on other institutions and other issues to keep the real truth from the Publics Eyes and Ears. The Big Cover Up. Thank God for Freedom Of Speech, So finally the truth can be told.
