About 500 welcome VP Biden

Published: Mon, October 4, 2010 @ 1:08 p.m.

STRUTHERS — About 500 people showed up at Astro Shapes here to welcome Vice President Joe Biden, who is spending the day in the Mahoning Valley drumming up support and money for the re-election campaign of Gov. Ted Strickland.

A Norfolk & Southern train was stuck on State Street for 25 minutes, stopping traffic to the plant.

Biden’s day in the area started with a visit to the Golden Dawn Restaurant on Youngstown’s North Side. He broke bread with Strickland at the historic diner shortly after noon. About 75 people were in attendance.

Six people, invited by the Mahoning County Democratic Party, spoke with Biden about various issues including health care, manufacturing and the concerns of senior citizens.

Biden and Strickland, both Democrats, then traveled to the rally at Astro Shapes. Yvette McGee Brown, Strickland’s lieutenant-governor running mate, also was at the rally.

Biden will later attend a fundraiser for Strickland at the Canfield home of Bruce and Rori Zoldan.

The goal is to raise $150,000 to $200,000 for Strickland’s campaign. Zoldan is owner of B.J. Alan Fireworks and Phantoms Fireworks companies.

Most polls show Strickland in a tight race with Republican John Kasich for the gubernatorial seat.

This is Biden’s first visit to the Valley as vice president. He visited the area three times while running in 2008.

AWSOME ! This would have been the event of the year if it wasn't dwarfed by Barney Frank's visit to The Valley .

If the republicans keep their word on all of the cuts they're going to make (fat chance of that - they're politicians, after all), it's just possible that they'll relegate themselves to permanent minority status again, once the reality sets in.

After 8 years of the slam dunk on America, you neanderthals still don't get it. You got crumbs from the tables of the rich during the Bush years. When you put your cash into the stock market in record numbers (rigged like Vegas) you now blame the new administration for your money woes. You must be kidding. Wake up.

"he broke bread with Strickland shortly after noon and then according to some present he turned water into Ripple!

Later he inspired the people when he reminded them of when he told Katie Curic how Roosevelt went on TV to calm the people after Wall street fell. Brought a tear to many of the faithful's eyes!

This clown is one heartbeat away from the presidency...... And no, I would not of been happy with Palin being one heartbeat away either.

"crumbs" from the table for me from the Bush years are better than nothing at all from this Administration that would rather hand out loaves of bread to a society that contributes nothing in terms of paying taxes and such.

When was the last time Dick Cheney came here to dine with the folks at the Golden Dawn? Like, never?????

The question should be, "Why did Joe come and dine with the folks at the Golden Dawn"? And the answer is, because he was stumping for sitting Governor Strickland who does not even have a fifty-percent approval rating this late into the General Election; not really giving a hoot what the patrons at a local diner in Youngstown, OH are thinking about. As for Dick Cheney, a Republican, coming and dining in Youngstown Ohio. That would be about as safe as Kim Kardashian walking up Hillman Street at 1:00 AM.

Yes, he was politicking. He is a politician. That's what they do. In both parties. The difference is that Biden came here to talk to and listen to some little folks. Cheney would never have lowered himself. He was too busy sitting in his ivory tower making war plans. I swear, you're "d****d if you do, and d****d if you don't" as far as many of you are concerned.

You are correct in saying that Biden was "politicking", and so was Dick Cheney when he appeared at the Spread Eagle Tavern in Hanoverton. Biden came to Youngstown because he is a Democrat, and would be welcomed here. the same went for Dick Cheney in Hanoverton, he is a Republican and he was welcomed there. If Governor Strickland does not garner at least 58 percent of the vote in this traditionally democratic area, he is history. You will see the President, Former President Clinton, and VP Joe Biden back again before this election is held. Without the loyalist 63% Valley Democratic Vote, Strickland will not win.

@ Senseless_ Sh_t

You're nuts,..

The change the country voted for was a vast difference from the republican plan and results,..AND THEY'RE RECEIVING IT !!!

The republicans knew they'd fleeced the people and nobody was tolerant to it. Thus their re-branding as Teabaggers wasn't ingenious.

Because they're not fooling the national electorate and both faces they're showing is being rightfully rejected.

The dirty campaign tactics is republican brand and every last one of their candidates are using them.

Lastly if you dare think there's going to be some re-takeover by those lying republicans / Teabaggers. You're even dumber than you are pathetic.

Ted Strickland is in trouble via his own damn doing. In 4 years time he represented himself as a democrat and displayed far to much of a republican accord.

Now he's managed to have lost the whole hearted backing of democrats and a great number of independents. For which those republicans he was buddied up with have their own candidate.

It's that clear and anytime an individual like a John Kasich, can contest that gubernatorial seat. Even when a democratic national party has accomplished so much. You've got what political strategists call a damn shame.

In contrast look at how solid the backing for Sherrod Brown and Tim Ryan is as opposed to what they're showing Ted Strickland.

By no means do I support Kasich because his record of legislative positioning is absolutely horrible.

Although all throughout Strickland's governorship I shook my head and wondered what in the hell did he call himself doing. There's a number of positions he took that left him fit to be defeated by damn near anybody.

I have no idea who was advising Strickland on his appointments policies and positions. But it was clear he nor them were clueless as to how they'd play to the state electorate.

So now it's time for him to test the supportable accord with whoever he valued. Which even against a John Kasich it damn sure doesn't look like he's going to qualify for a re-test.
