Thieves enter Boardman store from rooftop and steal $800

BOARDMAN

About $800 was reported stolen from Cigarette World on U.S. Route 224 Thursday, making it the second time in September that a local business was robbed by someone entering through the roof.

Police said an employee of the store at 110 Boardman-Poland Road found numerous cartons of cigarettes torn open and other debris on the floor. Reports state that the alarm was not beeping as usual and when the employee tried to call 911, there was no dial tone.

Officers found slats pulled off an air vent on the roof and a screen pushed in to allow access to the ceiling above Cigarette World, a bridal shop and cell phone store. Insulation was pulled up in two places and ceiling tiles broken from above, which police said allowed a camera to be disabled and for suspects to drop down into the back office.

A floor safe also had damage from attempts to break it open, police said.

On Sept. 9, an employee of Access Internet Cafe on South Avenue reported a similar incident where $7,647 was reported stolen. In that case, entry was also gained through the roof, and the alarm was disabled, police said.

“You don’t often see a lot of these entering through roof robberies” which makes these two incidents stand out, said Police Chief Jack Nichols.

Boardman detectives are investigating both robberies.
