Mayor launches 'Operation Redemption' for South Side

Published: Sat, October 2, 2010 @ 9:44 p.m.

Mayor Jay Williams is vowing that 25 vacant houses, suspected of being havens for criminals, on the city’s South Side near St. Dominic Church will be demolished by the end of the year.

Calling the project “Operation Redemption,” Williams said most of the houses are on Lucius and Auburndale avenues and Southern Boulevard.

Williams made the announcement outside the church on East Lucius Avenue during a Saturday prayer vigil planned as a response to a series of recent violent crimes.

This is only a front and a ploy to make the people feel better! They also said they were "beefing" up patrols in that area! How are you doing that when on the afternoon shift and the midnight shift you have only (3), yes that number is 100% accurate (3) patrolman for the entire Southside! Sometimes (4). The people that are in charge of this town are no good lying scum just like the Toney's. I haven't heard a bit of truth ever come out of their mouths!

It's time for Youngstown to stop fighting with the sheriff and work together and maybe they can increase there amount of patrols in the city. And if you only focus on the south side of town the crime will just move to the east or west side so this all has to be done city wide this is just not a south side problem. And actually this is a county problem because if you step up patrols in all of Ytown it will just go to the smaller cities around like Boardmen, Struthers, Campbell, And Poland This fight on crime needs to be a county wide project. And if its not this county will continue to battle these problems.

Empty houses do not kill anyone. Thugs with empty hearts, empty heads, empty souls, empty wallets and empty lives do. To fill that vast emptiness created by decades of neglect requires much more than a self-serving band-aid. Nothing will be done because there is no will to do it. The killing fields on the southside will continue until there's no one left to kill.

Well Jay, if you were to start operation clean sweep on the SouthSide I would be impressed . Right now the criminals in "THE HOOD" are very jovial that they haven't suffered a backlash over the killings .

If you don't ge tough with the criminals, tearing down houses is fruitless. Pound the criminals, put them in jail, and don't worry about overcrowding. The criminal doesn't worry about the victim or the rights of the victim------so why worry about their rights. If you commit a crime, you should lose your rights.

Jail are way to soft they are not a deterrent. We need to send the county sheriff to South America to get a idea of how a jail should be run. Then maybe we wouldnt read the same person get arrest again and again

This county and this country have become soft. We are too worried about peoples feelings and rights. There needs to be a major "happening". Until then the country and the underlying states, counties and cities will not change. You would need a dictatorship (the right one) to fix this problem. Then you'd have to go back to a democracy. The people obviously can not do it. The people we elect lie so they can be elected. We need and no sh$@ honest person to come in and save this horrible position that the entire country is in. Maybe a dictatorship isn't the answer but I cant think of anything else other than that. The government the way it is sure as hell isn't working. I guess the only other way to fix it is stop being candy azz, soft push overs or "liberals" and make stiffer laws and inforce them to the fullest! We have bowed down for to long. It's time for a "real" change.

Well put! Couldn't agree more! Here is a perfect example. The police do indeed know who and what people are selling drugs and carrying guns. The problem is as we all know, there are to many laws protecting them. It's the same aspect of the Feds using phone taps to prevent another attack on America. I'm more than happy to give up a few little rights for my family and I to be safe. I wouldn't mind giving up a little bit of rights to be searched or pulled over by the police. If you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to fear. People have this big conspiracy that the police are corrupt and would take advantage of this. I'm not sayin there aren't idiot no good cops out there but most are good people. Let us take back our streets our neighborhoods and our country.

Give me a break! Why are wee giving a free pass to Father Greg Maturti? After the death of the first member of his congregation, he was SILENT!

Now that it's election time, he's being pimped by every politician.

When asked during a radio interview what he and his congregation does for outreach he said, "Nothing" He continued on talking about a fund-raising WINE TASTE so they can expand their parish hall. The behavior of using cathedrals as a haven to do nothing.

Many have been ongoing trying to rid the area of crime and their efforts should be noted. Its committed folks like MVOC and ACTION working hard to bring about change.

Where these folks are looking out for the whole, Father Greg is only talking care of himself. IF he acted in January, things could have been different.

For that matter, the Rephic's were not victims because of the blighted houses around the church, yet this is now being lifted as the solution. HELP US GOD!
Opportunists like Father Greg and the politicians HE IS STROLLING WITH should be charged with "DRIVE BY COMMITMENT!"

It was reported on today's news there was a stabbing at a home in the area of the church, While folks are concentrating on mobile crime, what about these home invasions?

A Cardinal Mooney student was also most sexually assaulted last Friday when some two thugs in their late 20"s or early 30's broke into her home to burglarize it. They did not even know she was in the house initially. If she was not able to call 911 on her cell phone, things would have been tragic. Yes, this occupied home- which is not blighted is within the vicinity and walking distance of the church.

I do find it interesting that the church has a strong stance AGAINST capital punishment, yet its members are advocating it. I'm just saying.

So what most of you are suggesting is: Leave all the abandonded buildings/houses standing and put more money into police force so the criminals can be caught.

3 patrol units on the entire south side is very very underpowered I agree (Look at canfield, they have 3 cops out 24/7 and would have no crime if they had 0 cops out anyway). But the city has to cut its funds somewhere.

If the houses are left standing, then the criminals will be nowhere to be found. Its certain that every structure is not thouroughly searched when a suspect is on the loose.

Thank you Censorship,
I have been proposing the same approach. It cannot be an all or nothing method, but a strategic plan to dismantle the culture of crime that was/has been allowed to permeate this place. Long before these new age thugs came on the scene, we were known as MOB TOWN USA. IT seems that these "gangsta wanna bes" are only emulating what has been the models for several generations.
