Ruckus interrupts carnival at mall

Published: Mon, May 31, 2010 @ 12:00 a.m.

Staff report

Boardman

A carnival at Southern Park Mall was shut down after large groups of teens began fighting.

Capt. Don Lamping said the fighting began about 10 p.m. Saturday at the Bates Brothers Carnival.

Lamping said he doesn’t know what set off the offenders or how many were involved, but the incident escalated enough to close the carnival for the rest of the evening.

He said one arrest was made but didn’t have the person’s name.

“The first couple of nights were pretty slow, and things got nasty that third night, so [officers] weren’t expecting it,” he said. “You have people with differences, and they come together and decide they want to settle those differences.”

Lamping said two Boardman police officers were stationed at the carnival before the fights.

“We’ve had it happen in the past, and we try to protect against it,” he said.

Lamping said Boardman called for assistance from surrounding agencies, and no injuries were reported.

The carnival is scheduled to continue on the mall parking lot through June 6.

I wish the trash would stay out of Boardman. It's a shame, I live in Boardman, pay taxes in Boardman but I can't take my children to our town carnival. My husband took them last year and said it would be the last time. It's a real shame.

Dsl,
Hello! Where have you been. The "trash" live in boardman!

So the fights were big enough to shut down the carnival, but there was only one arrest? What is wrong with this picture? The whole lot of them should have been thrown into the paddy wagon and hauled to jail. Maybe 30 days in the slammer would be enough time for them to cool off.

Have you ever been in the Mall on a Saturday night? That will make you sick if you are a resident of the community. Your welfare dollars at work.

Eventually there will be no place in the valley you can go without running into the Youngstown hoodlums.

Doesn't surprise me, a pack of animals that have to ruin a carnival. Southern Park Mall use to be a really nice place to go, but now, forget it. Nothing but trash inside and out. Walmarts and Marxs in Boardman, same thing, parking lot is disgusting and inside as well. Such a shame. What happened to take pride in your city.

"He said one arrest was made but didn’t have the person’s name."

One arrest = Toleration and understanding .

We must be more sensitive when the subculture expresses themselves . We shouldn't judge them by our standards . To do so is viewed upon as oppression .

Lack of enforcement, i.e. one arrest, is the same as condoning and encouraging this behavior. That is typical in our valley, it belongs to the thugs. Your elected officials have now decided to lay off at least 88 from the Sheriff's Department. Have a nice summer and don't forget to reelect these same officials again.

Why aren't curfews enforced?? The little thugs shouldn't be out in the first place. I say take them all to jail and fine the parents (parent), if you can find them. Gotta hit 'em where it hurts, it will also generate some money that is needed for the cities.

Make the parents accountable and let them share a cell with their hoodlum kids. If you don't take a HARD stand, you will have trouble all summer long. Lets keep laying off police officers untill the thugs are in control. If you don't take out the trash,, it will only get worse.

HEY dsl1219! We will keep our trash out of Bordome if you keep your crack heads and johns out of Youngstown. Don't you have a motel in Clanfield to buy your drugs and prostitutes???!?!? OH least we forget that you in the suburbs aren't so lily white!!!!!!!

@blkpride- what is your solution? Do you think holding parents accountable will work? I say it's worth a try. Most of them aren't doing anything else anyway.

Youngstown is a carnival. These thugs are just like cancer--slowly spreading out into the burbs and trashing once nice neighborhoods. Some parts of Boardman are starting to look like the South Side of Youngstown. Gotta get rid of the cancer or it will keep spreading.

Remember a few years go there was a kid at the St. Charles festival with a gun. Luckily quick police work got it under control

True it's sad to see the city and it's surrounding area having racial issues. It's all related to economic conditions. We have to get people working and in school. However the problems at the mall is the result of kids not having anywhere to go. Nothing constructive to do. We are all looking for someone to point fingers at.This area is racially divided and will always be. That's why the area is in the situation that it is in.

USA1 First I never said I was proud of anything. As far as homicides that took place in Klanfield, I am sure the mafia took care of most of their business elsewhere. Just like you suburban white folks do now. You buy your drugs in Youngstown, your prostitutes in Youngstown, and then you blame youngstown. Come to Youngstown on a Fri or Sat night and count all of the underage drinkers from the burbs.

"We have to get people working and in school."

I'm tired of that excuse, there are jobs but no one wants to work honestly. They want to sell drugs and rob, it's quicker and easier. As far as school, that is a hopeless cause. They don't want to learn and there parents could care less if they do or don't.

"However the problems at the mall is the result of kids not having anywhere to go. Nothing constructive to do."

There are things to do. I grew up around here and we always had something to do. Theres free skating in Boardman, theres other venues they can go to. YMCA has wonderful facilities, Mill Creek, sports, summer jobs, volunteer work, charity work, etc. No, they rather hang around the streets, walk around like they own the town, do nothing constructive but wreck havoc on the innocent citizens that work hard for what they have and they just rob them that's there idea of something to do. Where there getting there next hit, thats there constructive thing to do. It's what you make out of your life not what excuses.

"We are all looking for someone to point fingers at."

No one is pointing fingers. Its what it is. People need to be held accountable for there actions and not excuses for why they do what they do. The excuse train should be de-railed.

"This area is racially divided and will always be."

And why is that? Just recently, a murder at a church in cold blood, his parents threating a witness that had the courage to help the police, a 12 year old robbing a Subway, so far all the homicides in the city,
Until these young wanna be thugs do something with there life it'll always be the same old excuses like you posted above. The race is card is getting old to. Listen to this preacher, he speaks the truth and addresses all the excuses you posted.

The suburbs do not allow that type of behavior. Hence the reason why everyone wants to live there.

Sounds like Youngstown is the enabler to the vices. Clean up Youngstown and either no one will have anywhere to go or the vagrants will have to find somewhere else to get their thrills.

Why are kids scuffling at a parking lot carnival news? There are three posts about this on the front page and several more on the forums page.

The comments surrounding this incident are way overblown. They reflect a separatist attitude prevalent in the suburbs and the deep racial hatred in the Mahoning Valley which is the root of the very problems you all claim not to want.

I'm not shocked by what I'm reading here because I grew up the Valley and have heard much worse right here on this message board. It is one of the main reasons I left the area.

In reality there are fights--public fights--in Boardman everyday involving white children and adults but they never even make the news. A lot of crime, drugs, and violence goes on in Boardman (and always has) perpetrated by the white residents, yet it's never reported.

So, it's clear this is not about kids being knuckleheads at a parking lot carnival. It's not even about the decline of Boardman, because Boardman was never what it was made out to be to begin with, which is paradise. Boardman has always had the same issues as every other community. Anyone denying that is a liar.

To the person running around these threads making the comment about "hunting season," I strongly suggest you lose that idea.

There have been a lot of ignorant comments made about black people not caring about their children. The quickest way for you all to find out how much of a lie that is, is to put your hands on a black child. This is not 1950s Mississippi where a black child can be murdered, the way Emmitt Till was because of the racial hatred of whites.

You people can scapegoat the massive problems of Boardman off on black kids scuffling at a street fair and Youngstown, if you want. But you all know the truth. You are the authors of your own horror stories out there.

You love talking about personal responsibility. Start taking some yourselves and stop blaming a child acting out at a frigging carnival for all the dirty politics, criminal activity, and depraved living you are now reaping the benefits of.

Personal responsibility is an obligation to oneself. It is your individual duty to ensure your good character and behavior irrespective of how you were brought up and what kind of conditioning you have received. Whether you like it or not, you must accept personal accountability for the mess and disorder that you have created in your life. Life always gives you the consequences related to your actions or inaction. The onus is on you to amend your mistakes and negligence. Individual responsibility also includes being accountable for the degree and level of your health, wealth, success and happiness.
I don't blame the dirty politics, criminal activities or depraved living for my responsibilities.

I would suggest that the mall management take a pass on the carnival next year. For that matter, they should ask them to pack up and leave. Mall carnivals, church festivals, and street fairs need to charge a cover fee of at least $10 like the Rib Burnoff and the Canfield Fair. This eliminates loitering for the sake of causing trouble. If the church festivals would charge an entrance fee, then the families would start to come back and revenues from the event would increase. Families spend money, teens do not.

It doesn't matter what anyone does...the same thugs are going to go to where the other thugs are. If there was a carnival on the lawn of the White House, thugs would be there. I mean, the only reason these kids go is to fight and act "hard". Let's do this: If you get caught fighting, you spend time in jail. Forget a plea. Just get in the wagon and go to jail. Forgot it!

Lifes2short,

I know what personal responsibility is. I live it every day. I also know what it is not.

Personal responsibility is NOT blaming a bunch of bad assed kids' acting out for the downfall of an entire township.

I stand by what I said: Youngstown and blacks are being scapegoated for all of Boardman's problems and it's ridiculous.

You people are on here advocating violence against children and fanning the flames of racism, yet you call THEM savages and animals. I don't see anything responsible in the comments of this thread.

"Personal responsibility is NOT blaming a bunch of bad assed kids' acting out for the downfall of an entire township."

Where in my comments did I blame bad assed kids acting out is the reason for the downfall of Boardman? Boardman is Boardman, I live in Campbell and we have our own problems right now.
And my comments about personal responsibility is taken responsibility for your actions and these kids won't have no recuperation from this. It'll get blown over until the next festival.

"You people are on here advocating violence against children and fanning the flames of racism, yet you call THEM savages and animals. I don't see anything responsible in the comments of this thread."

I don't care if your white, black, pink, purple, green, yellow and all the colors of the rainbow, when you have innocent people that can't enjoy a nice time anywhere or someone that works hard at there job to only get robbed or killed, or go to church and get killed, then you are nothing but a ANIMAL. Pure and simple. You prey on the INNOCENT. That is a ANIMAL. And they come in all sizes shapes and colors so quit the racism bit a ANIMAL is a ANIMAL. And why is it racism because of how some people feel? Why can't they say how they really feel? Why bring in the race card if you feel how you feel? Because you have to be politically correct?
