Israeli commandos storm pro-Palestinian flotilla; 9 killed

Published: Mon, May 31, 2010 @ 11:27 a.m.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli naval commandos stormed a flotilla of ships carrying aid and hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists to the blockaded Gaza Strip today, killing nine passengers in a botched raid that provoked international outrage and a diplomatic crisis.

Dozens of activists and six Israeli soldiers were wounded in the bloody predawn confrontation in international waters. The violent takeover dealt yet another blow to Israel’s international image, already tarnished by war crimes accusations in Gaza and its 3-year-old blockade of the impoverished Palestinian territory.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhayu canceled a much-anticipated meeting with President Barack Obama in Washington on Tuesday in a sign of just how gravely Israel viewed the international uproar. In Canada, Netanyahu announced he was rushing home.

Israel said it opened fire after its commandos were attacked by knives, clubs and live fire from two pistols wrested from soldiers after they rappelled from a helicopter to board one of the vessels. Later today, it released a grainy black-and-white video that it said supported its version of events.

Reaction was swift and harsh, with a massive protest in Turkey, Israel’s longtime Muslim ally, which unofficially supported the mission. Ankara announced it would recall its ambassador and call off military exercises with the Jewish state.

North Korea torpedoing and sinking a South Korean ship brought no outrage . The PALS have brushed up on their PR . Now this will embolden them to once again shoot missiles into Israel . As long as Israel exists they will be at war with them . The only peace that they desire is the whole piece of Israel .

You can't compare international conflicts as apples to apples Stan. It takes someone with a very simplistic worldview to do so.

So where's the outrage against North Korea, Quail ? They don't even have to pay for the ship let alone the loss of lives .

While the aid being sent was miniscule the PR given to them by Israel was priceless !

Britain joined other countries in denouncing the attack as "deplorable" with Palestinian leaders describing the bloodshed as a "massacre".

An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council is due to begin shortly.

Meanwhile, the attacked ship, the Mavi Mamara, has docked in the Israeli port of Ashdod.

The deadly dawn raid on the Turkish ship sparked a mass protest in Istanbul with 10,000 people marching through the street, burning Israeli flags.

Stan, don't believe everything that you read in the mainstream, corporate-owned media.

How exactly do you know that North Korea torpedoed that ship?

Secondly, America should stick to protecting our own borders. There have been skirmishes off and on between North and South Korea since the armistice, and there will surely be more.

A Vietnam Vet said it well yesterday on CNN, a bullet may kill your enemy... or it may make more enemies.
This incident isolates Israel even more...and rightly.
