WASHINGTON — Motorists are paying the highest prices for gas since October 2008.
Retail gasoline prices rose today on an expected increase in demand and as more expensive spring and summer blends of gasoline make their way to the pumps.
The nationwide average hit $2.799 per gallon, a penny higher than Wednesday, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service.
Prices have now jumped 18.9 cents in the past month and are 87.9 cents higher than year-ago levels. Back on Oct. 23, 2008, prices averaged $2.8215 per gallon.
The Energy Department and many industry experts expect prices to top $3 this spring.
Gasoline prices tend to move higher in the spring as more drivers hit the road and refiners shut down units for maintenance, as they prepare to make more expensive summer blends of gasoline with fewer smog-causing emissions.
Wholesale gasoline prices also are at their highest point since October 2008.

Cities are complaining that their income taxes are decreasing well why not try something in America and decrease the cost of gas / diesel / heating fuels and see if this resolves the problem. If betting on this proposal you can be well assured that if gas / diesel / heating fuels drop to less than $1.25 cents a gallon you would be a winner. Posted by Dereck
To dimebag: Bush controlled the price of gasoline. What did that get us? Gas prices were over $4.00 when he was in office. Remember? The only thing that got controlled was the additional money going into the pockets of his family. (The Bush family made their fortune on oil if anybody forgot that fact) Obama can't fix eight years of deception and ineptitude in one year. Oh yeah, and I think the former VP had some sort of connection to oil. High gasoline prices and oil men in office. Coincidence?
dimebag - The difference between Obama and Bush on this issue. You say when is the President going to fix this? Atleast Obama would try and do something to fix Americas problems, because he is an actual leader. Bush and his do-nothing crew would sit on their a$$.
Rethugs can't stand Obama because he is a stong leader who is leading our Country.
The answer is to convert to some other fuel -- such as natural gas or electric-- that we don't have to import and transport from our "friends" in places lke the Middle East or Venezuela. Then we would not have to be subjected to reduced refinery capacity, limiting the supply of fuel, increasing the price of gas.
