Campbell council overrides mayor’s veto

As expected, council overrode Mayor George Krinos’ veto of the city’s 2010 budget.

At its meeting Wednesday, council, minus member Bryan Tedesco, unanimously overrode the veto put in place March 8 after Krinos indicated he felt shut out of the budget process.

He told council at its March 3 meeting that he believes a budget he proposed was better, and revisions made later by council members and city Finance Director Sherman Miles occurred in meetings that didn’t include him.

By overriding the veto Wednesday, council avoided any interruptions to city employees’ pay. They are paid every two weeks.

Krinos has contended his budget proposal was better because it included money for paying a firefighter he recently recalled to the city’s understaffed fire department.

He said his budget allowed for the leasing of equipment to clean streets and storm sewers, which would save money in the long run over contracting for those services.

He also said his budget proposal had a $140,000 surplus vs. a $30,000 surplus in the one revised without his input. Council ultimately passed that revised version March 3.

Miles told The Vindicator that Krinos’ surplus was gained at the expense of the park fund after he moved $100,000 out of it.

Miles said state auditors agreed the park fund shouldn’t be used to support general-fund appropriations.

The budget that council passed does not include the money for the firefighter’s salary.

Paul Marshall, head of a state commission that oversees Campbell’s finances because it is in fiscal emergency, said at a recent meeting between the commission and council members that an adjustment must be made concerning the firefighter, though he did not say the firefighter had to be laid off again.

In a letter to Krinos dated Dec. 22, Marshall recommended against the firefighter’s reinstatement.

FOR EVERYONE who reads this and wants to comment please be aware that Miles is 100% wroung. The mayor is not moving 100k out of the park fund. That would be illegal, what the mayor is doing is not including the speding of an additional 100k in the park fund to repave the streets in the park WHICH IS COUNCILS IDEA TO REPAVE THE STREETS IN THE PARK. Last year the park fund made 180k and spent 180k. The mayors budget shows again the park making 180k and spending 180k (same as the last 3 yrs history) where as councils budget shows a 280k being spent while the park is still only going to make 180k. Big difference from moving it and not spending it.

Also the mayors budget even if you exclude the savings of the 100k he is saving the park from spending is still 40k to the positive without laying off the fire fighter and leasing the equipment needed to repair and maintain the streets. The mayor used the help of the people in the finance department who were there for over 25 yrs each and one acts as the interim finance director when there is not one in office.

councils budget is 30k to the positive while laying off the fire fighter and also not getting the equipment for the street.

HOW DID THE PARK FUND EVEN GET INVOLVED IN THIS TOPIC.

Wow how do you know anything about Krinos and his bills. A better question is when did the mayor start paying the city's bills. You need to get off the personal side of anything to do with krinos and his business and look at the city. Oh wait I forgot you dont live there anymore, so again stay out of it.

Im sure the meeting that council had without the new mayor had the old mayor in attendance. Seems that dill is still controlling his puppets.

@cmhs68

How are you ever going to improve the park if you don't spend money in it? the $180,000 for the park is just to maintain the park the extra $100,000 is to improve it by paving the roads in the park which hasn't been done in probably 30-40 years. Why take that moeny to pay a fireman when he isn't needed? The state oversight also was against hiring this fireman back.

Krinos needs to do whats right for the city instead of trying to buy votes by hiring his political hacks!!!!

I'm glad the parks roads will be paved instead of having someones house burn down, or someone getting hurt or killed. NOT!!!! Get your priorities straight. Every member of council needs to be replaced. They are ridiculous. They obviously don't have the cities best interest in mind. That will surely be reflected if any of them try to run for mayor next term.

Hey Campbell Memorial High School 1968, (cmhs68),

In reference to your question, "how do you know anything about Krinos and his bills?", anyone who reads the Vindicator knows that he stiffed the restaurant that catered his wedding.

City council is going to BLOCK everything the mayor wants to do. Each council member has his/her agenda. If council remains in control, the city will continue its decline. Why pave the park streets when every street in the city need repaired? The streets are absolutely horrible. It makes no sence to me. Am I wrong?? Am I missing something??

@lidieo3

Ya, your right, lets take all of the money for paving roads and lets put it towards paying employees, then when the money runs out you'll have a city with roads needing repaired and no money to do it with.

I'd rather have a car run off of the road in the park and hit a kid because the roads are so bad then not to layoff this fireman. NOT!! GET YOUR PRIORITES STRAIGHT!!!

What happened to the tax that was passed to keep ALL POLICE and FIREMAN? Or, is that ANOTHER REDIRECT of city funds? Earmarked for one thing, redirected to someone's pet project!

The city still gets the money but as the people who work and pay taxes decreases so does the amount of money received for the tax. There is alot of lower income non tax paying people moving in and an increase in crime and vandalism. Its not enough to cover the police or fire dept anymore.
