Students in the third and fourth grades at Poland North Elementary spread a little birthday cheer for Read Across America, an annual event that takes place Mar. 2, the anniversary of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

Students celebrated the storied author by collecting supplies for “birthday boxes” — colorfully wrapped packages filled with cake mix, frosting and decorations.

The boxes, which were assembled by the students, will be donated to children at The Beatitude House.

“We talked about how we celebrate our birthdays — with cake and parties,” said Tracy Kaschak, a fourth-grade teacher who organized the birthday box drive. “Some kids don’t have that, they don’t have the means to buy a cake and frosting — it is something extra.”
