Western Pa. borough rescinds gun ban on property

Published: Thu, March 11, 2010 @ 8:57 a.m.

ALBION, Pa. (AP) — The northwestern Pennsylvania borough of Albion has rescinded a policy banning guns on some borough property.

Council president Jerry Hall said the policy was enacted in January because officials were worried about people being injured by firearms. He said anyone coming into a posted building with a gun will not be arrested but merely asked to remove it.

The policy was enacted after the borough’s sewer plant operator was cited for disorderly conduct when he brought his shotgun while responding to a late-night alarm in November.

A local resident had filed a private complaint saying the policy violates Pennsylvania’s constitution and state law barring local governments from regulating firearms.

Borough council voted Tuesday to rescind the policy.
