AMS wrestlers headed to state tournament

Four Austintown Middle School wrestlers and one alternate qualified for the Ohio Junior High state wrestling tournament March 20-21 in Marion, Ohio.

All wrestlers qualified by placing at the Steubenville District wrestling tournament Feb. 21.

Sixth-grader Alex Mackall (54-5) took third at districts at 78 pounds to qualify for the state tournament. Earlier in the season, he finished third at the Ohio youth wrestling state championships.

Mackall, a nine-year veteran of the Austintown Youth Wrestling Club, finished third in his weight class at the 2010 Ohio Youth Wrestling Association state tournament Feb. 14.

He was awarded the 2010 Joshua Hephner Memorial Tournament Award of Excellence by the club’s coaches for being an outstanding and accomplished youth wrestler.

Luke Peterson (34-4) heads to state after a second-place district finish at 132 pounds. The eighth-grader’s other season accomplishments this season include taking second at the Federal League tournament and first at the EOWL tournament.

Camran Rezapourian (37-1) qualified the state tournament by winning a district title at 154 pounds. The eighth-grader won his bracket at the Federal League tournament and the EOWL event.

Eighth-grader Taylor Balog (31-11) qualified for state as an alternate at 146 pounds by taking seventh at districts. He was also fourth at the Federal League tournament and fifh at EOWL.

Tony Behanna (35-5) placed sixth in the 164-pound district bracket, but failed to qualify for state. The eighth-grader finished his junior high career by winning an EOWL title and taking second at the Federal League tournament.
