Feast Day event


The Feast Day of St. John the Baptist, which is celebrated in many countries, will be observed by St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Drive, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

The event will include a bonfire in which broken, worn or outdated sacramentals will be burned. The event will be on Cleveland Street near the church and will include an outdoor prayer service and the bonfire. The celebration will continue with hot dogs, punch and ethnic potluck dishes. Entertainment will be provided by the band Conjunto Riquena.

Although the event is free, those attending may bring a covered dish to share.

First Friday Club


The Rev. Dr. Rick Malloy, assistant professor of cultural anthropology at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, will be the featured speaker for the First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown on July 1 at Antone’s Banquet Centre on Market Street.

The luncheon will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $15. Reservations are due by Friday.

Church revival


St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, meeting in Gibson Heights Presbyterian Church, 755 E. Dewey Ave., will conduct a revival at 7 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Mila P. Cooper of Mount Moriah AME Church in Cleveland and at 7 p.m. Friday with Pastor Gerald Cooper of St. James AME Church in Cleveland.

Concert at church


The Mighty Sons of Joy will present an old-time gospel musical at 5:30 p.m. July 2 at Living Word Church, 74 14th St. Funds will go to purchase a church building.

Prayer initiative

Shenango Valley for Christ, a prayer initiative, will meet at 9:30 a.m. today at Living Word Church, 1109 E. State St., where they will pray then divide into groups.

The groups will visit “pressure points” of government, education, business, media and spiritual centers.

Ongoing series

villa maria, pa.

Villa Maria Spirituality and Education Center continues its monthly ongoing series of morning seminars with “Essences of Spirituality: Solitude” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 13.

Cathy Cawley, adult/family program director at Villa Maria, will be the presenter.

Program participants may stay for lunch, but registration is required.

Cost to attend the program is $7; program and lunch are $13.70.

Bus trip

east liverpool

Jewish Christian Studies North/South will sponsor a bus trip July 21 to the Maltz Museum near Cleveland to see the “Women & Spirit” exhibit, which tells the story of Catholic nuns in America.

The bus will leave at 10 a.m. from the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown, and pickup at 10:45 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Warren.

The approximate cost is $40 and includes transportation and museum ticket.

Voice of Hope


The 13th annual Voice of Hope dinner is planned Sept. 11 by Catholic Charities and will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the movement in the United States.

Bishop George Murry will celebrate Mass at 5:30 p.m. in St. Columba Cathedral. A dinner will follow in Stambaugh Auditorium, where 2010 Voice of Hope awards will be presented.

Funds from the fund-raising dinner will benefit emergency assistance programs offered by Catholic Charities.

Men’s Day program


Grace African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1137 Main Ave. SW, will sponsor its annual Men’s Day concert at 6 p.m. today.

Musical selections will be featured by For Grace, Grace AME male chorus, New Bethel Baptist Church male chorus, Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, male choir of St. James AME Zion, male choir of Community Church of God in Christ and Community Choir Male Chorus.

After the concert, refreshments will be served in fellowship hall.

Class completion


Participants in the Faith Discovery Class at Austintown Community Church celebrated completion of their studies by joining into the membership and life of the church on Pentecost Sunday, May 23.

As members of the Evangelical Covenant Church denomination, emphasis was placed on knowing the Bible, studying the tenants of the faith and learning the responsibilities of membership.

Class members were Adam Campbell with mentor John Palmer; Bree Helminiak with mentor Amy Schaffer; Cassie Keller with mentor Ella Mallory; and Rebecca Pritchard with mentor Rick Farina.

Assisting the Rev. David Roberts with instruction were Brad Bloomster, director of ministries and Linda Milne.

Italian culture week


Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel, will sponsor an Italian culture week program for children from 6 to 12 years old from 9 a.m. to noon July 6-9.

Activities will include language, sports, cooking and music.

Registration is due Monday. The cost is $10 per family.
