Mahoning Dems plan dinner with Barney Frank

YOUNGSTOWN

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, will be keynote speaker at the Mahoning County Democratic Party’s chairman’s dinner.

The event will be either Aug. 12 or 13 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman, said Mahoning Democratic Chairman David Betras.

“This is big for the Mahoning Valley,” Betras said about getting Frank for the fundraiser. “Anytime I can get powerful people to the Valley, I’ll do it. We’ll have him in a room with Valley people to discuss our issues and concerns. It can only help the area having him here.”

Frank’s committee oversees the nation’s housing and financial sectors, including banking, insurance, real estate, public housing and financial securities. Frank, a Democrat from Newton, Mass., has served in the House since 1981.

“He’s powerful and a great speaker and he’ll mobilize the local base,” Betras said of Frank.

And Frank will be a huge financial draw for the local party, Betras said.

Last year’s chairman’s dinner, with Gov. Ted Strickland as the keynote speaker, raised about $125,000, with tickets costing $500 each and another $500 for a private event with the governor and other elected Democratic statewide officials.

There will be a private meet-and-greet with Frank before the dinner. Betras hasn’t finalized the price for the private event and the dinner, but tickets will cost less than they did last year.

Even so, Betras expects the party to make about $200,000 from Frank’s visit.

This dinner will be at a larger location than the one last year, Betras said. The Aug. 20, 2009, dinner was at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitors Center at Mill Creek MetroPark’s Fellows Riverside Gardens with about 200 attending.

Betras expects at least double that for Frank.

The money from the dinner will go toward county party operating expenses and to help get local and statewide Democrats elected in November, Betras said.

U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson of St. Clairsville, D-6th, a member of the House Financial Service Committee, is largely responsible for convincing Frank to come, Betras said.

Betras said local banking, real estate and financial leaders are contacting him asking to serve on the committee organizing the event.

I guess this is part of the payback the Dem leaders are giving Wilson for voting for healthcare. Ryan gets a plum appointment on an important committee and Wilson gets to take credit for bringing BF to town. What did Boccieri get?

This time the embarrassing Barney Frank.

Who is next? The Kardashians.

Treating this event as something good is testimony to how far the Valley has sunk. The one person MOST responsible for the housing market debacle, the record number of foreclosures going on around us, the BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars spent on bail outs, and we think this visit is a good thing why? Charlie Wilson and Tim Ryan Pelosi should be ashamed of themselves.

..and look who is primping and preening, ambulance chaser Betras. These morons are all from the same cloth, that of liars and shell gamers. They praise an idiot that lied about the mortgage holders and want to bring him into Ytown to celebrate? What will they celebrate? The fact that the housing market has gone to hell, and that Ytown ghetto dwellers have moved into what used to be nicer areas and ruined those areas, having 7 police cars and SWAT at their house for the jobless boyfriend of the mom with 4 kids, all going to different schools with numerous cars pulling in and out of the driveway after 2 minute "visits" after the boyfriend held a knife to someones throat and was cuffed and cruisered before 10:00 am? That's what I bought into when we moved to Boardman years ago, right? All because O and clowns like Frank have ponied up to give to the already tax-sucking welfare trash and non-qualified homebuyers a way to buy homes where they never used to be able to. Thanks, Sylvester the Cat...

"There will be a private meet and greet before the dinner". Here's a thought; how about Dave and Barney hop on the ol' WRTA bus and take a spin around Youngstown and get a good look at all the forclosed homes? After that, they can make a stop at the St. Vincent DePaul food pantry and some of the churches that are providing food to the working poor of the Mahoning Valley followed by a quick stop at one of the hospital emergency rooms and go into the waiting room and ask for a quick show of hands of everyone there who is uninsured and will be getting free care because the hospital is forced to write of millions and millions of dollars each year to the uninsured in our community? Then they can stop by my place and I can whip them up a batch of my famous dollar store boxes of macaroni and cheese (unless it's right before payday and then it'll have to be Ramen noodles). Just a suggestion.

I guess I get to post a link to one of my favorite videos where Barney and friends claim that there is no problem with Fannie and Freddie. I love where one of the finest California has to offer, Maxine Waters sucking up to Franklin Raines.

Here is the link.

Also a link to the story about Raines giving back millions to avoid prosecution.

ps: You hear the referenco to (OFHEO) a number of times. That is short for Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight

One of the first replies will no doubt be that this occurred during a Republican congress. Well, they knew that they did not have the votes because there were dirt bags in the Republican party also. See, that is the difference between a Republican and a Democrat, A true Pub can and will slam his own party when appropriate. A true Lib will never admit that his party could do any wrong.

"TB, Barney Fwank and Chris Dodd intimidated lending institutions into approving unqualified losers for home loans guaranteed by Fweddie Mac and Fannie Mae"

hahaha so those people signing the policies for homes they had no chance of financing don't have the responsibility for defaulting?

How does this line up with your usual anti-tax, personal responsibility blathering?

oh wait...it doesn't.

Whether you like him or not, whether you blame him or not, whether he is your type or not, the political reality is that Barney Frank is a very powerful Congressman and having an opportunity to meet with him is worthy of the resurgent Democratic Party Dave Betras has helped. I don't like him either, but if I could somehow convince him that things need to be changed, then he has the power to change them, or at least move the powers that be in that direction. If all you do is throw rocks, expect him to put up defenses and ignore you. He is a politician, not a family counselor. All he needs is the votes in his district. What we need from him is corrections of past mistakes and he does not even necessarily agree they are mistakes - yet. We should be grateful for the opportunity and do our best to make good use of it.
