Bass Classic to benefit United Way

Staff report

The 11th annual Muransky Companies Pro-Am Bass Classic, hosted by Aqua Ohio and benefiting the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, is Saturday at Evans and Pine lakes.

More than 50 teams of professional bass anglers and their amateur partners will compete for cash and prizes. Among this year’s amateur participants are Pittsburgh Steelers football players Daniel Sepulveda, Brett Keisel and Jared Retkofsky.

Also on Saturday, a Kids’ Fish & Fun Event will be in conjunction with the pro-am event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Evans Lake off Calla Road in Springfield Township.

There will be fishing along the shore, face painting, crafts and other activities. Children will receive prizes and a goodie bag with a T-shirt. Pizza and cotton candy will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.

Pine Lake is located in Beaver Township.

The Muransky Companies Bass Classic pits top pro bass anglers paired with amateur anglers who make a donation to the United Way. For many of the amateurs, it is their best opportunity to fish from a tournament-rigged bass boat operated by an experienced angler who shares the ins-and-outs of bass fishing.

Prizes will be awarded for total weight and biggest bass after the tournament weigh-in at 2:15 p.m. at Evans Lake, the same location as the Kids’ Fish & Fun Event.

Additional sponsorship is provided by The DeBartolo Corporation, Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell, Sensus, and Whispering Pines Village.
