Traficant out

Published: Tue, July 6, 2010 @ 10:00 a.m.

Jim Traficant’s bid to return to Congress is over.

The Trumbull County Board of Elections disqualified Traficant this morning as a candidate for the 17th Congressional District seat because he did not have enough valid signatures on his nominating petitions.

The former congressman needed 2,199 valid signatures, but turned in only 2,092, 107 short.

The 17th District, now represented by U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, includes portions of Trumbull, Mahoning, Portage and Stark counties.

For more on this story, see Wednesday’s Vindicator or Vindy.com

No surprise here. He doesn't want the seat and he certainly doesn't want to suffer the loss from the beating he would get at the polls. This keeps him in the news and gives him more avenues to fan the conspiracy theories about how he gets screwed all the time. The bonus is his complete lack of risk because now we can't tell him with votes to go away. Traficant is NOT a victim - he is a self-promoting criminal who has a bizzare need to be on stage. The fact that he is clueless to the better direction the Valley has taken since his demise demonstrates what a dinosaur he is. The last thing we need is to go back to the old way of doing business. We should be doing even more to root out corruption and expose any crooks in public office. Trafficant and his ilk should never be tolerated, let alone supported.

Actually, i wanted Traficant to run. I wanted this convicted felony to have his butt handed to him with a landslide loss at the polls. I wanted him to fully realize that the Valley has moved on and does not want to hear a single word from him again.

Go away Jim. And stay away. You are not wanted around here any more and no one cares what you think.

again, i reiterate as long as the valley votes for only democrats it will stay the same. the republicans have no reason to help us and the democrats have no reason to help us because they already own the valley, so they allocate resources elsewhere ,in places that sometimes vote rep-sometimes dem..in hopes of gaining something. the valley is left with half-wits ala tim ryan, john bocerici-- also the people who are big shots around here wouldn't be if this place were to become more properous.if they lived 60 miles north or south of here they'd be just another jack@ss with a gold chain on the outside of their sweater.

Now the Vindy can quit campaigning for Ryan and Ryan can once again ignore his district. Alot was happening when Ryan and the dems were nervous regarding Traficant who actually cares about all the people and the district, not just the lib/dems back in D.C.

This is probably justice served. The area was divided into new districts after Jim was removed. People who at one time supported and voted for Traficant probably signed the petitions without realizing they were no longer in his district. Pity; I would have loved to have seen the outcome so that maybe Jim would just go away, once and for all.

Wow it's amazg no one reads the whole article. He was 107 short. Which is funny becasue he had time down in Hanoverton to bring the TEAbaggers the BS they want to hear. He was pouting how he was told even if he brought in enough signatures he still wouldn't be on the ballot. You can't tell me between Saturday and Sunday he couldn't get 107? I laugh at his whining about the IRS, you make more you pay more? Well let's look at all that goes into how these Corporations make their huge sums of money, they rely on tax breaks, lobbying, and if it's something we need like Oil we'll committ Americans to go over and secure these dwindling resources with force and their lives. Do I wish Tim Ryan was a bit more less Al Gore ish in his sometimes monotone voice...sure I do. Do I want our region to be another joke on late night comedy like Jimmy was on Jay Leno a few years ago? Heck no we have made some strides in the recent years, certainly not fast enough to everyones liking but progress (I know it's a cancer according to Glen "McCarthy" Beck) is slow and as long as obstruction from the now all the sudden care takers of the purse strings and "Right way" keepers to the well being of our country keep it up we might as well be back to 1910 in technology and civil rights. The "I want my country back!" morons need to get a life, and stop being hippocrites, they seem to not be too upset when W formed the Dept of Homeland Security in very short order, committed lives to Iraq under false pretense. Never capturing or even really trying to hard to get bin Laden. So Jimmy take your sad story and spin it off to someone who cares, I'm tired of people around here saying I'll vote for him "I hate taxes" that provide services I use and rely on, and not being the laughing stock of NE Ohio. This is 2010 not 1982, and I hope the Dem's keep their seats and gain more, because this idea of Ozzy and Harriet lifestyle, and taking chickens to the doctor for medical care, and using our 2nd Amendment remedy threats makes us all look like backward morons. I'll use my guns for hunting game, and not using some metaphor referencing guns for supposedly meaning to vote out some Democrat. I think Stalin and Hitler used those means literally to deal with any one who opposed them, if not sure watch Glenn beck I'm sure there will be some Nuremburg Rally footage sometime this week on his crying tirade.

Traficant's failure to get on the ballot is symbolic of what a big failure he was to the people who elected him and to the Valley. He's old news; we're moving ahead with positive news for the future: V&M Star, the Cruze, VXI, Exal expansion, YBI and the future Warren incubator. And we're getting national and international attention from Inc and Entrepreneur magazines and the BBC America about the transformation of the Youngstown area.

It's of no consequence,..

Although to not even have gotten enough people to vow to even have interest to place him on the ballot.

Is an impact result of either insurmountable voter awareness. Or the candidate not having made themselves known enough to the populous.

Where in this case there's no identity crisis and there's not an individual in the areas that don't know who he is.

So it's no mistake and it clarifies that the greater number of residents that would have been affected by him emphatically rejected him.

Where to have established such a recognizable name. And yet fail to even acquire enough signatures to be allowed on the ballot is so finite it's almost unprecedented.

See anyone that fails to even qualify to be on the ballot by lacking enough of the areas constituents signatures. Is deemed far worst than losing an election at the ballot.

Because to not even qualify having such a name recognition is having the people so conclusively deem you unfit to even consider. That they showed it in a way that epitomizes,.. NEVER AGAIN.

Now the people need to show that same resolve. To be determined to start getting rid of those of incompetence and thieves all throughout city and state seats

If you don't know or haven't heard from them in any positive light. They're doing nothing but cashing a free check and orchestrating problems so vote their worthless @##'s out.

That goes all the way from city council and commissioners to Judges, prosecutor, Sheriff, Coroner, State seats in Columbus and the rep's that holds the districts cards in federal capacity in D.C.

I left Mahoning County 32 yrs. ago and only come back to visit. Like others, when I talk about my birthplace/home town, people ask about Kosar, first, and Jumbo Jim, second. One successful, another....disgraceful.

Like most I left Mahoning County for work/employment since the basis of industry (steel) folded in the mid-70's.

Jim (Trafifcant) did little to attract industry to our area. He wasn't credible at the time. He acted like an ass....a dumb ass. He was a mobster in the latent era of Sherriff. Ray T. Davis. For those youngsters out there, the pathetic (modern) history of Youngstown can be read on the internet....Jimbo will be a constant in that thread. Of his eight terms, much of which elapsed during the Clinton Presidency, he wouldn't play ball with the new president.....see also Mike White, Cleveland Mayor...He didn't "get" it. Jim just didn't "get" it.

White, in Cleveland, played ball and his city was rewarded with tons and tons of Federal Outlay. Youngstown and Warren were sort of overlooked. Imagine that! How the heck did THAT happen??? Answer: Traffy was an idiot and wouldn't play ball with Clinton. Youngstowners, YOU should be ashamed. YOU elected an idiot parading as a Democrat.

The Youngstown Vindicator reported circa 1998 that Jim was actually voting with the Republicans at/about 67% of the time. Think that had anything to do with their/his problems with Congress? Maybe. Probably. Dude wasn't even a Democrat. dude's district was at/about 25% unemployment and the only thing he stood for was IRS reform. Are you kidding me? Idiots deserve what they vote for. The Trafficant era is thankfully OVER and the thought of having THAT bum represent the Mahoning Valley is simply nutty...from my distant view. Nutty. He's nutty and so are the people who would actually vote to send him to Washington.

Furher, Jumbo Jim's people threatened my Dad with violence if he didn't stop writing anti-Traffy letters to the editor. Pathetic. My Dad was a life-long/die-hard Democrat who was, of course, put-off by Jimbo's ridiculous antics and nonsense. Imagine that! Were YOU in that group? Maybe.

In closing, you Youngstowners are doomed if you send that nut back to Congress. Ryan is good. Makes sense and restores some sense of credibility to a place lost, long ago, desperately in need of serious representation.

What goes around comes around......

Good luck, Youngstown!

Hope for the Valley,

I guess I am a "tea bagger" as I am now on the Portage county distribution list. I asked to be added because I was so impressed by their objectives. I was VERY skeptical about even going to a meeting because of folks like you. Let me tell you what I have seen there and elsewhere at TP events. A couple of months ago, at very well attended Portage county TP meeting the organizers invited candidates for the primary from both the Republican AND Democratic Parties for various races in the area. Each candidate what given equal time, introduced without bias, applauded, and asked questions on issues. It could not have been more civilized. In fact, the Dems that had the stones to come into what they thought would be the "lion's den" were treated so well that in conversation after the meeting they stuck around and had cookies and coffee with the "tea baggers" after the meeting concluded. You see, they realized these are ALSO MY CONSTITUENTS. I didn't see or hear anything that was even close to a racist or terrorist word uttered. What I saw was a group of several hundred people who cared enough about the future of their locales, that they got off their asses and went out to hear the candidates, so at the poll they could make an informed decision. I have been to several events since, and you are completely mischaracterizing these folks. There may be a few nuts in some of those crowds, but can you tell me the the Democrats don't have the same? I challenge you to show me one credible report of any of them getting violent or displaying terrorist activity. From what I have seen and heard from this crowd - this is very clear: that type of behavior will not be tolerated. So you can keep name calling and preaching about right wing nuts, but that approach is really giving you the appearance of the NUT. Stick to the issues - have healthy debate. Quit the partisan playbook stuff and enlighten us all on why "your side" is the better choice.... I'll say this, the Tea Parties are researching, studying, and getting ready to debate the FACTS in the fall. They are not on blogs slinging mud. And by the way.... I'm pretty certain that the Tea Party out in Portage and Summit county were supporting Jim Graham anyway. SHOW US SOME PROOF OF RIGHT WING TERRORISM - or learn a new tune please....

Sorry about my initial comment, I thought their deadline to submit signatures was today, but the way he was rambling on from 21's reporting it seemed to me it was today, I know issues need to be in to the BOE by mid August for November. I don't follow Youngstown news much unless it's 21 and I'm still awake. And no I didn't switch to Democrats, I ride the fence, I always have. Do my views on true conservatism line up with the GOP? somewhat. Do I believe that the mega wealthy that use "we're the job creators" cry as the reason they don't need taxed any more than they already do. Even with all the great tax breaks they have gotten over the years with Reagan, Bush, Voinovich, and Taft it never stopped the companies to flee Ohio and the US to Mexico or China! I've been on the bad end of some of these corporations and Wall Street ideas over the years, and I am not happy how things went. Is government the ultimate answer? Of course not but when the opportunist out spend and out maneuver the middle to lower class then someone needs to step in and level the playing field some. Do I feel there are people out there that are all too happy to accept welfare then to find gainful employment sure there are. Just like with Universal Health Care I wish when I went to college in the mid 90's that I would have had some coverage while pursuing my education, but that didn't exist unless I want to claim welfare, or I had to get a job that provided something just in case. For responsible American's the idea of creating a family as they mature in their 20's and 30's has become a daunting task when inflation and opportunist take every dime you make because you don't have A+ Credit and make 75K or more combined or more. Would it be nice to have a wife be a stay at home mom for the first couple years of a child's life while Dad works hard to provide that would be great but reality is both parents have to work, and the rat race is so fixed it's gone beyond a punchline but a true tragedy of the American Family. And no its not the homosexuals that are killing families either, last time I check this was the land of tolerance and every citizen has the right to pursue life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I hope this country will be smart and not let people of doom and gloom, and some that are closet KKK member's scare citizens into voting for Big Oil friends AKA Republican's.

That's the best you can do? For starters, I couldn't read exactly what the guys sign said other than he had Parkinsons... But it's evident he was there to stir the pot. Show me what he said to irritate the "crowd" not just their response. He "sat down in front of protestors" - again indicates he was there to fuel some fires.... No walker or wheelchair, and I didn't see the physical signs of advanced or even moderate Parkinsons.....

Back to the point however, let's just say these folks were total A-holes and this guy didn't provoke them, Where is the Credible ( this was on a progressive website who "just happened" to have a camera in place and filming - pure coincidence right?) story of violence and terrorism?

I saw no threats, no violence, and Terrorist behavior?? C'mon now.... I think the one guy was trying to make a valid point about " I'll give you money ( assistance, charity ) but I don't want the Govt. TAKING it. A clip like yours is joke - show the whole exchange and context not the part that makes the people look like they were giving a handicapped guy hard time.... If it were really bad, there would have been much more than 10 seconds of video.... It's no wonder we are becoming a weak country when people don't apply common sense to the BS that is fed to us through our computers and TV's. I call BS.

Still waiting for someone to show me how violent and terrorist-like the tea party is.... All yours showed me was that those folks might have been jerks.... again - I think there was more to that scene than the progressive website wanted all to see.

Here we go Cambridge..... I totally expected the bleeding heart response. The fact remains this was staged. The sign didn't provoke, HE did. And before you go too far on the " we can all get an illness.." sob story - Here is a tidbit for you. I HAVE an clotting disorder ( MTHFR) for which there is no cure. I was diagnosed at age 31. Blood thinners for life. Hospital for 5 weeks with no guarantee to make it out. 8 years later, I am managing it. Knowing that at any time it could debilitate or kill me. Not looking for any sympathy, but follow me... I was responsible and got Life insurance in my late 20's. I jumped at the chance to add more (pretty expensive insurance) a few years ago, because of a promotion with an insurer that did not require health screening. So I pay an extra $100.00 per month for supplemental long term disability insurance - so that if/when a catastrophe happens my wife and kids will not be "financially ruined". That's a lot of money for me, but I sacrifice to do it. And as for denying treatment? I work in the medical field ( not an M.D.) and I can tell you NOBODY is denied treatment. So SPARE us the bleeding heart BS. We all have or will have health issues. I don't see us all out there exploiting them for Political purposes which is what this guy did. So in summary, the folks in your video very well could be A-holes, but to say they are terrorists? C'mon. You take a sign that says " I DRIVE A HUMMER - IT"S MY RIGHT " to a "green" Al Gore summit, and plop down in front the the green folks ( mostly dems) and see how you are treated. Probably like sh*t, but I wouldn't classify it as terrorism. Still waiting for some proof of violence and terrorism of the Tea Party from HOPE FOR THE VALLEY...

I appreciate those laughs that only an individual like you can provide. So along with compassionate in a somewhat selfish way I don't want you to go anymore over the edge than you are.

Why doesn't everybody just stop talking about Traficant and let him do what he wants to do!!!! You all say he is in the past but you obviously all care enough to read an article about him and then take time to reply!!! The guy has a set of balls...who can deny that? Let him run and do what he does and see what good comes from it! The guy is smart and we all know it!! Stop talking so much s*%# and leave the guy alone already! Go for it Jim! Show all these as*&*%#@ up!!! I am on your side! Go Jim Go!!!!!!!
