Interracial relationships increase

Published: Sat, July 3, 2010 @ 12:00 a.m.

America has elected its first biracial president, who, by the way, identified himself as black in the 2010 census even though his mother was white.

But I wondered what are the most recent statistics on another race-related topic: interracial marriage and dating.

I saw a recent report on CBS News that said, according to the latest Census figures, interracial marriage was rising but not as fast as from 1990 to 2000.

A CNN report from June 4 said interracial marriages are at an all-time high. The CNN report used figures from a Pew Research Center study, which showed that one out of seven new marriages in the U.S. is interracial or interethnic.

Some other tidbits from the CNN report and the Pew study:

Asians and Hispanics are most likely to marry outside their race.

In 2008, African-Americans were three times more likely to marry outside of their race, compared with 1980. There is a big gender difference, however. Pew researchers found that it’s more common for black men to marry outside their race than for black women.

Americans, particularly those in the 18-29 age group, are more accepting of interracial relationships.

People who live out West are more likely to wed outside their race than people who live in the Midwest and South.

The CBS report, using the Census statistics, produced these nuggets:

Hawaii was the state with the highest share of mixed marriages, 32 percent.

Mixed marriages jumped from 2.25 million to 3.7 million, or 65 percent, from 1990-2000, as such unions became more broadly accepted in Southern states.

The statistics appear to show that slowly but surely, race and ethnicity are no longer the pre-eminent factors in marriage or dating.

As a baby boomer, I grew up in a generation where interracial dating and marriage were just beginning to become acceptable. The music, movies and literature of the late 1960s and early 1970s focused on a better America where we could all live together in perfect harmony. No longer would heads turn and tongues waggle when a black man and a white woman held hands and shared a kiss in public.

Now there are still some people in all races opposed to interracial marriage and dating. But it appears that America, in general, is more accepting of such activity.

What a contrast from the time when many states had laws that made it illegal for marriage between the races. In fact, an interracial Virginia couple — a white man and a black woman — got married in Washington, D.C., in 1958, but were arrested when they returned to Virginia. Virginia was one of the states that made interracial marriage illegal. The couple sued the commonwealth, and their case, Loving vs. Virginia, eventually was heard by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled that laws banning interracial marriages were unconstitutional.

I’m sure there are many cultural reasons people have for denouncing interracial dating and marriage, and I know racial boundaries are not going to disappear anytime soon.

But I’m glad to see more Americans now realize that marriage is more about a man and a woman forging a life together based on similar life experiences, education and values as opposed to the color of their skin.

"Interracial relationships increase"

This is simply both sides of the racial spectrum checking out to see if it's all good .

I bet that interracial marriages have a better success rate than those of similar races and I bet the reason for that is because of the commitment and true love from each.

UnionForever....I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's probably the most ethnically diverse area in the country. Western and Eastern Europeans, Blacks, Asians and Latins have been having mixed race children for generations. As far as these children being accepted, to tell you the truth, where I live no one even notices.

In my opinion mixed race people are the most attractive. The women are smokin hot.

And please change your username. I've read many of your posts and they don't represent anything that a real union person is about.

Arabs are considered "Caucasian", but they're hardly "white". I'm not a nazi or anything, i just think it's funny when some Italian goes on about being "white" when they obviously aren't. Those ones in the north are many time Germanic in ethnicity. This pervades their culture as well, as any Italian from Milano will tell you; Southern Italians and Sicilians aren't white, they're Arab.

Where do you think the term "guinea" came from? Not that I think it's a good term to be used, but it has it's basis.

It must hurt you tremendously to have found out that after all your racist rants and pro-white views, that you're not even white to begin with.

Southern Italians and Sicilians are not white. They don't share the culture/language/customs/cuisine as Northern Italians. They don't even look the same.

The vast majority of Italians in the Mahoning Valley are of Southern/Sicilian descent, hence, for the most part they are not white.

There's nothing wrong w/ not being white, Sicilian food's way better than Danish, for example.

USA, the reason for that is that Italians have tried to pass themselves off as white for the last 100 years. If you were born in a town like Youngstown where Italians have a lot of power, it makes sense that they'd change the definition to include themselves. It's what many light-skinned blacks had to do in the past as well.

The truth is that nobody should've had to pretend to be white in order to become accepted into American society. I think it's a travesty that USA1 needs to pretend to be something he isn't just so that he isn't discriminated against.

There were some SciFi writers, long ago, who wrote about planets inhabitants fighting each other in intergalactic wars. The inhabitants were of one race, with the various species having been eliminated through intermarriage over the milleniums. These were writers like Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein and the like. It was, after all science FICTION.

From the above thread of discussion, then, all races are inherently inferior? Is that what's being said? So, in comparison to whites, blacks are inferior; in comparison to red skinned people, yellow skinned people are inferior? Everyone has to be "leveled out" so we are all the same like some science fiction story?

So the different races' culture and mores have absolutely no validity?

We need to accept people no matter what their ethnicity, race or creed is. That is the bottom line; all else is bullcrap!

Before it gets too far, I'm just making light of an actually very serious subject. My Grandmother married an Italian after her husband died, and he always treated those of us that weren't his blood family just like we were. I've actually got loads of respect for Italian culture. I'm merely pointing out what I find to be insanely hypocritical viewpoints held by those of Italian descent like USA1.

My Grandfather eventually worked his way up the ladder in Youngstown, and took an office job that required him to travel. Here, it was fine to be Italian, but if he went to Cincinnati or down South, he was a dago/wop. Better than a black (in their eyes) but well beneath a German/Englishman/Frenchman. He knew what it was like to walk into an office and have the locals look at you like all you're after are their wives/daughters. As such, he never adopted that peasant viewpoint that too many Italians have today that decry racism, but only when it's against them. They've got no problem telling you all the reasons why blacks aren't to be trusted, then complain about how others are anti-Catholic in the same conversation.

I just thought it was important to let USA1 know that there are 10s of millions of white Americans who look at him as a non-white. And, that maybe he shouldn't be so extreme in his racial views.

USA, why is it so easy to pass off as white? Because of decades of community activists that made it OK to be of Italian descent, that's why. Italians have had to convince Northern Europeans that they're not actually a pack of wild animals.

Over the decades, and through intermarrying, they've largely achieved this.

It also shows that you've never lived outside the Mahoning Valley. Because if you had, you'd have known that only 20-30 years ago Italians were still seen as criminally-inclined by the majority of white America. Only in areas where 100s of thousands of Italians were living considered them to be white. Outside of the Rust Belt and the Northeast, Italians were not considered to be white until very recently.

Germans and French were never viewed as a "dirty" race. There were concerns over cultural hegemony, but they were always viewed as white and civilized. The Jews, not so much, but the other two were never considered to be uncivilized like the Southern Italians were.

It's not being thin-skinned, it's pointing out hypocrisy. It's also knowing enough about history to know that if you're a member of an ethnicity that 2 generations ago wasn't considered white, then you probably shouldn't be so sympathetic of right-wing views on race (because you could never pass as a proper white man in their view).

Any other people that were not anglo-saxon were considered of a lower statute and there were laws to keep them in their places. We have evolved as a society and I think we should agree that the views of these anglo-saxons are skewed. Everyone is different and you should be proud of your differences. Gee, Stan doesn't know history... I'm not surprised. Read William Jenkins book Steel Valley Klan and you'll educate yourself...

"With the establishment of steel mills in the late 19th century, Youngstown became a popular destination for immigrants from Eastern Europe, Italy, and Greece. In the early 20th century, the community saw an influx of immigrants from non-European countries including what is modern day Lebanon, Israel, and Syria. By the 1920s, this dramatic demographic shift produced a nativist backlash, and the Mahoning Valley became a center of Ku Klux Klan activity. The situation reached a climax in 1924, when street clashes between Klan members and Italian and Irish Americans in neighboring Niles led Ohio Governor A. Victor Donahey to declare martial law."

I don't know how this turned into an Italian thing but anyone who thinks Italians weren't discriminated against in this country and weren't considered less than white doesn't know history.

In post #34 I gave a list of champion boxers that had to change their names just to get a fight. Obviously many fighters who didn't become champions had to do the same.

That was to be a prize fighter. Does anyone think Italians didn't have to do the same to become a teacher, a bus driver, a cop or whatever? I knew Italian families in Y-town who changed their names when they immigrated because of the way Italians were looked upon.

I'm not sitting here crying for Italians, I'm just trying to make the point that prejudice is wrong no matter who it's against.

Every race and nationality has their stereotypes. Probably 10% of any race or nationally are jerks. A racist or a bigot is a person that looks at that 10%, the very worst and paints the whole race or nationality with that brush.

Why does interethnic/racial marriages currently need to be discussed? It does not require analysis. It's the equivalent of discussing the moon landing like it was yesterday! What shocks me most is that the writers and editor found this news to be cutting edge enough to print! I think it is time for The Vindy to step up and take responsibility for the racism very prevalent to The Valley and maybe address the ongoing efforts found in the community to bridge the multicultural gaps. I never knew how bad racism was in Ytown until I left. Come on Vindy! Talking about something that was so yesterday is beneath you and the people of Ytown!

No race is dying, there will always be white people and there will always be black people etc. The point of this article is to address the growing number of interracial relationships and as a result, mixed race offspring.

Contrary to how people perceive these children, I don't think it's right to say that a mixed baby is black. That baby is BOTH white and black no matter what ignorant people say. If raised by both parents, they should have an understanding and appreciation of both backgrounds. It falls on the parents to instill their pride of heritage.

As for "the survival of the white race" being "necessary to all other races worldwide..." I think the correct version of that statement is, the survival of America is necessary to ALL other people worldwide seeking life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Saying that only white people can continue America's legacy (and ignoring that spot in history where whites imported slaves) is just being naive.

In 200 years, if this world is still turning and America is still going strong, it won't matter what the majority race is, as long as the American spirit is present and freedom is still prioritized, than humanity will be okay.

USA1 & Stan's last comments could be construed as the white race are better people, or superior... Be careful with those sentiments guys, I can think of some horrible people in hell who may agree with you.

I cringe at that possibility. Let me stress I do not speak out of racism. I`ve had the opportunity to see and experience many cultures. All of them have traditions that go back generations. I`ve seen the pride people have in their cultures and their individuality, why would we want to lose that? Why mix it up to the point where those heritages get lost or half celebrated? Why make the human race a bland, beige culture where no one remembers their history?
The people who post thinking the world would be a better place if the human race was more mixed are living in a fairytale world. The human race is based on the "I`m better then you" idea. It is who we are and what we`ll always be. We could all be green and we would still find some difference where racism would exist. It is human nature.

Uhm... I'm coming to this late but I must ask a question.

Everyone talks about white's racism toward blacks. Yet, rarely does anyone talk about black's racism toward whites. (Yes, I know, some people prefer the term African American; others prefer Black.)

Black racism toward whites is very real. Wonder if the Vindy writer will do an article about that??

I guess if I had to keep trying to convince people of that I would answer like you did!

Don't get mad, you just made it too easy. I have told you before that I only post because it is fun to joust with others!

"I think some of you guys would fit in better on the stormfront forums."

I was banned from Stormfront for posting as Louis Farrakhan and trying to present the black viewpoint . They were very intolerant . Louis Farrakhan has some very good views as what do with black criminals preying on blacks and others . We need to bring him to Youngstown to get things under control . Jay is too wimpy to do the job right .

it would be nice to see everyone post their age next to their comments. That way the rest of us can figure out roughly how many more years we have to tolerate your existence.

You can tell who's what age by their comments. I've only heard older people or people of an older generation say " I just feel bad for the kids" ( of interracial couples) I've never noticed many people caring one way or the other about this when I lived out west.
IMO, however, if a president who appeared to be white, but was found to be biracial, only claimed to be white, the Blacks everywhere would be in an uproar. Probably even rioting and stuff.

Age will just show how naive you are. As you get older your views change. As you have children of your own you realize how the world really is.

I was raised in a home where my dad was just like Archie Bunker. So I heard a lot of racial epithets as I was growing up. But as I moved out and got out on my own, it seemed to me like a lot of that kind of talk was pretty mean-spirited and a lot of nonsense. I find that the older I get the more open minded I am. I think what's inside a person is more important than what's on the outside.

Once again, articles on race incur the most comments. Interesting. BTW: if you have 1/8 Black blood in your body, you are Black. So said the U.S. gov't in reference to slavemasters "other" children. So, Obama didn't make himself Black, his gov't did!

Just curious, but how many on here actually do have family members that have married outside of their race (excluding ethnicities)?

I ask because there is a big difference between being "okay" with the idea of interracial marriage (never having to have dealt with it) and actually having lived it first hand.

Do not get me wrong, people can do what they want as far as marriages and their personal lives, but from my own personal experience of family marrying outside of their race, it has been a bad experience: caused some serious problems in the family that probably will never be resolved, people on the outside here in town have not been really that accepting of it, and so on.

All I am saying is the reality of it can be very different from the idealistic idea of it. Maybe my experience was isolated, but I think it is something you would need to live through before making a judgment on it.
