PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A judge says a suburban Philadelphia mom who falsely reported a carjacking is a danger to her children if released before a $700,000 fraud trial.
Prosecutors call 39-year-old Bonnie Sweeten a flight risk because she fled to Disney World with a 9-year-old daughter last year after the hoax kidnapping.
But U.S. Magistrate Linda Caracappa in denying bail says Sweeten involves her daughters in her schemes.
She says Sweeten used her teen daughter as a conduit to speak with a male inmate in three-way phone calls she made from the Bucks County Jail.
A public defender says Sweeten is getting counseling and wants the chance to see her children.
The paralegal faces at least nine years if convicted of swindling her boss, a relative and law firm clients.
