Death of 8-year-old Mercer Co. boy ruled accidental

Published: Thu, January 28, 2010 @ 3:28 p.m.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A medical examiner says the death of an 8-year-old western Pennsylvania boy who was shot while hunting raccoons with relatives was an accident.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office says Rudy Shetler, of Fredonia, was shot in the head when a dog knocked over a rifle that had been propped up near the boy. The gun fired when it fell over.

State police say the boy was shot in the head about 10:10 p.m. Monday in a wooded area of Delaware Township, Mercer County.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner investigated because the boy died Tuesday at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

If I had laid my gun aganst my car and the dog knocked it over and it fired, I would be in big trouble. How come when this guy has his gun leaning against his buggy he is not.
