Woman killed outside South Side church

Published: Sun, January 24, 2010 @ 12:00 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — An 80-year-old Brownlee Woods area woman was fatally shot in the head in the St. Dominic Church parking lot after leaving the church at about 8:45 a.m. today, police said.

Capt. Rod Foley, chief of detectives for the city police, said someone arriving at the church found the woman in her car around 9:15 a.m. on the Auburndale Avenue side at the rear of the South Side church.

Foley said the motive for the homicide appears to be robbery and that police believe the victim was the last person to leave the church after the 8 a.m. Mass.

“It looks like she was assaulted at her vehicle, and that’s where she was murdered,” Foley said. “We believe she was shot in her car,” he added.

Police were canvassing the neighborhood and examining church security camera videos seeking details of the shooting. Police had no suspects in custody and were not releasing the victim’s identity late this afternoon.

How absolutely horrid. How many more murders like this must this community endure before the forces of civilization wake up and clean up that entire wasteland known as the southside? May as well throw the northside, eastside and most of the westside as well as Warren into that cleanup effort as well. But it's more important for the mayors to wine and dine with war criminals abroad than clean up the bloody mess at home.

And about guns in the city see:

Its January 23rd, 2010 and this is the 4th murder. Maybe this system might not of saved her, but anything helps in getting these animals and guns off the streets.

USA 1
You stated "This piece of trash should have been shot numerous times and then lynched "
Now you know damn well the victim was a little old white Lady and the animal that did this was Black, so it is illadvised to use the term "LYNCHING" when refering to what should be done to the piece of crap that did this. You don't want to be called a RACIST . This type of act is all to common at this Church, usually it is just your average Black Male carjacking a car from your average little old White Lady. Review the police blotters and you will see the trend yourself. Black on White crime is way to common on this side of town. Why anyone lives there I don't know.

This is just unbelievable an innocent senior citizen coming out of church. Can someone get a grip on Youngstown it is not that big of a city. This makes no sense and no one saw anything, I find that hard to believe it was broad daylight. Jimmy and Jay what are you really doing why can't either of you do anything about the crime that goes on in Youngstown does it have to hit home before you do your jobs?

My prayers go out to the woman's family.

Clean up Youngstown, bring in the three strike you're out law, do something!

I hate to assume, but assuming this was a black on white crime, what would happen if David Duke came into town as would Jessie and Al if this was reversed? Whites have no recourse, no where to turn, I know, I know, let the law take care of it.

I would agree with Stan except that the same could be said about almost any area of Youngstown, and even the various shopping areas. This particular crime is especially grievious to me, though, because St. Dom's is my church. I am sitting here mentally going through a list of friends who attend the early daily Masses and wondering whose funeral I will soon attend. I read on another site that this crime is all society's fault because we have not provided jobs to the disgusting scum like the person that has done this! I respond that whether you are rich, poor, black, white, employed or unemployed, you do not have the right to commit crime because you have nothing else to do!!! A criminal act is ALWAYS the fault of the perpetrator because, in the end, he/she makes the final decision to do evil. That it was done in a church parking lot shows just what kind low-life the murderer is.

This is a disgusting, horrific crime in every sense of the imagination. But USA1, the ignorance of your comments never ceases to amaze me. Obviously these cowards picked this women because she was an easy target. Even if she was armed, there is no way an 80 year old would have the reflexes to defend herself against a young armed thug. How can you possibly blame "liberals?" There isn't a liberal alive that would advocate such a heinous act. Unless, of course, you are criticizing liberals for supporting a person's Constitutional Right to a fair trial. And if you don't believe in the justice system our Founding Fathers set up, you are living in the wrong country.

Are you serious? I would give whoever said that a VERY very rude wakeup call. That is what I mean about society today, now this piece of garbage has a reason to MURDER a person? What goes in the mind of people who think like that. So mind boggling. There is no reason whatsoever to MURDER a person, unless in self defense, and I highly think a 80 year old lady put up much of a fight. This sorry excuse of a animal (and yes, a animal, because he has no concept of right from wrong) and needs to do all us a favor and put a gun to his head.

Eric, I don't want to turn this into a political discussion, because this lady's murder and the way her life ended should be not forgotten. However, I 'll tell you my opinion of why liberals contribute to this problem. Young, black unwed mothers is not being addressed by black leaders (liberals), helping these mothers with free childbirth, free care, free food and subsidized housing. These mothers are barely educated themselves and how would you expect them to form an early education for their children. Drugs and alcohol are a way of life that these children are born into. Liberals and their bleeding hearts blame whites and take no responsibility for the terrible situation that they have taxpayers finance. It would be hard to do but liberals have to say enough is enough, we're no longer going to support you. Maybe this would slow down the unwed birthrate and give these people a chance to keep up and work for a better life. Don't get me wrong, this person that killed this lady is an animal, probably born without a conscience. It's his fault. Lady, I really hope your beautiful life didn't end in vain. Maybe this will finally make people who can make changes realize what a mess this is and quit making excuses. There's no excuse for this.

Murders, car-jackings, robberies, rapes all will continue until society decides to take action and change the way we allow our children to grow, police our streets and live our lives.

As long as our current liberal society continues we will have those who take advantage of it. There is little for a criminal to fear. We have allowed this predatory behavior.

Quit complaining, it is your fault criminals continue doing this.

Insanity is doing the same thing the same way over and over again and expecting a different outcome.

Far too many thugs are loose on the Southside who have killed before . The killer of this woman may never be caught . When the government checks are depleted they then forage for dollars to support their drug habits . This woman wasn't the first victim and she wont be the last .

To city hall all will be well when they can pinpoint the shots fired within the city . Lets face reality . We know where the shot was fired that killed this woman . The killer left the scene and is free to repeat his act . I suspect that this woman didn't fork over enough money to suit the killer . She was executed with a round to the head .

RAIDING ALL DRUG HOUSES SHOULD BE PRIORITY ONE IN THE CITY !

The next step is to provide mandatory jobs so these thugs dont have 24/7 idle time to do their dirty deeds . Plenty of work needs to be done to the infrastructure of the city .

I find it ironic that people who are violently anti abortion (not borylie specifically but Stan and USA1 based on their posts on the article about the closing of the clinic in Ytown) are complaining about unwed mothers having too many babies.
I am a socialist (about as liberal as they come!) and my solution is that ALL males at the age of 10 undergo a vasectomy which will only be reversed after their eighteenth birthday if they pass an appropriate fatherhood test, they get 3 tries to pass the test after that they can appeal for a judicial override.
No more unwanted babies, No more babies with unfit parents, and a whole lot fewer abortions.

Stan I agree with you on the mandatory jobs program everyone should be contributing to the good of the community. As for raiding all of the drug houses why is the city not using RICO laws to repossess all of the assets of the drug criminals and from anyone who aids and abets them.

The blame lies with the judicial system in this country. When this person is caught he will probably have an arrest record as long as your arm and an almost non existent time served record.

When a person commits a crime that carries a twenty year sentence it gets plea bargained down to an eight year crime and the criminal ends up serving half that. Four or five years for a twenty year crime and that's if they weren't sentenced to probation.

A small percentage of the population is committing a large percentage of the crimes. Those people need to be locked away. Build more prisons and stop plea bargaining and we will all be a lot safer.

A comparison of crime stat's for 2008
.

The STATE of New Hampshire
Population 1, 300,000
Percent Black 1.2%
Murders in the year 2008 for the ENTIRE state 15
.
The CITY of Youngstown
Population 80,000
Percent Black 44%
Murders in the year 2008 for JUST the City 29

.
Why is this?
If the State of New Hampshire was like the City of Youngstown, there would be 471 murders a year

.
If the City of Youngstown was like the state of New Hampshire there would be 1 murder a year ( actually .92 which is less the one) , yep that is right just ONE.

Why , Why , Why is there TWICE as many murders in just the City of Youngstown then there is in the ENTIRE state of New Hampshire.

.
I think we all know the answer to that question.

It's not a black white issue like the racist posters here would have you believe. It is a poverty and drug issue. Economic conditions are a far better indicator of crime than color. It just so happens that blacks are far more poverty stricken than whites. New Hampshire's crime rate is low because the state has very little poverty not because it has few blacks. The converse is true in Youngstown. High crime and abject poverty. Why would anyone go into Youngstown for anything is beyond me. Especially into the most troubling areas!

Third, tell me what do activist judges have to do with this poor lady getting murdered? It is perfectly legal for citizens without a record to carry weapons. It is every individual American’s choice to be armed or not. I never said otherwise. Maybe the church should provide armed escorts. There is not a liberal alive that would object to that.

For once, I just wish you would realize that just because something horrible happens, it is not the “liberals” fault. And what are you talking about when I said you don’t have the anatomy to defend yourself? I never said such a thing. Get your story straight.

Borylie, I don’t necessary disagree with your idea that there are too many handouts. I work hard for my money, and I don’t want a dime of it to go to an able bodied person who is just lazy. But I also don’t think eliminating benefits to poverty-stricken mothers would slow down the rate of unwanted pregnancies. The trend has been to cut welfare benefits. In fact, usually the only way now to obtain welfare benefits is to be a single mother. So as a society, what should we do about taking care of children who didn’t ask to be born? Healthcare is expensive. Should we refuse to provide the mother with prenatal care, and then throw the mother and kid out into the street? Conservatives want abortion to be illegal, but at the same time don’t want to provide public assistance to take care of all of the additional children that will be born should abortion be made illegal.

You do not know what the police do or do not know unless you yourself are a cop which I highly doubt. May she rest in peace Amen. There are no words to explain any of this !!!!! Maybe this is a wake up call. There are not many GOD fearing people around anymore and why is that??? Society has changed and is going into the wrong direction. St. Dom's is a wonderful church. We once were members and my Grandaughter was baptized there. We moved from the Brownlee Woods area years ago. Our Sympathy goes out to her family. May GOD help them through this tragedy.

Last week I watched the news and how the mayor and ryan were fighting so hard to see why HUD wasn't giving Youngstown money for clean up. Why isn't all this effort put into ridding this city of the thugs that run around like this and kill some poor innocent lady. People can't afford moving out of these thug infested areas and look to their local government for some kind of protection and never see it. I use to live in that area and go to school at St. Dom's and am not shocked but very sadden of what the Southside of Youngstown has become. Anyone that kills another human being should be sent right to the electric chair no ifs and or buts, no repeal nothing. Rest in Peace Angeline

Thomas that was a totally stupid comment concerning black people. There are wars between Jews and Muslims and what about Kosovo and Northern Ireland? It is not about white or black its about an innocent woman being killed. However there is tension in black communities and they have a distrust for the police which helped to originate the "no snitch policy". Although its sad that mistrust started back when they were being wrongfully arrested, sprayed with hoses, etc, etc, etc. So past racism still has an effect on today. With that being said hopefully someone will come through and report any information they know.

Justice in the eyes of the subculture is getting away scott free . Even if he doesn't get pinned to this crime he will rob and kill again . The next time things may not go well for him .

Unfortunately, the law of average's caught up to one of the Parish elderly that most likely attended this inner-city church for many years. Regardless of her age, the rest of the congregation must understand that this is not the same area around the parish that it was twenty years ago. If it is not safe to go there, then go to another church in a more safer part of town. Yes, even your praying needs to relocate because of these thugs. If you think they care about human life, you're sadly mistaken. Most of them have been raised in dysfunctional surroundings with no family stability (structure), whatsover. If it makes some people feel better you can blame it on the Police Chief, the Supt. of Schools, etc. but chances are they didn't create this beast. My deepest sympathy to her Family, and may she Rest In Peace.

They have much newer churches in the areas that people live. The suburbs are very Catholic. The cities not so much. A new church would not stop crime. The less crime areas have the newer churches.
The Catholic Church has assets, not cash. Their financial report is released every year.

This is absolutely ridiculous! The leaders of Youngstown-Warren have failed us once again. How many more people must die before this ends? No wonder any new industry avoids the Valley. Who wants to setup shop in high crime areas? Message to our "leaders:" stop taking trips to Paris, France to talk to V&M Star leaders. Stop going to DC to get money to tear down houses. If Tim Ryan would have actually done his job, we would have had the money! The "leaders" of this Valley need to wake up and focus on making a better community!

This is so tragic! Enough is enough already. Nothing ever get's better here, it only slowly get's worse, and worse. The only one to blame are the thugs that continually perpetrate these crimes.Other communities have adapted to a global economy, and outsourcing of jobs in a civilized manner. It is fine time America stop paying for it's original sin, and hold everyone accountable equally. There are communities that are obviously tainted, and have been tainted for a long time now. This must be dealt with. We are on the fast track to a state of emergency, if we are not already in the early stages of it. This is not how normal humans behave. What is it going to be like here in twenty years. My god an eighty year old woman was shot at church. This is absolutely awful! I grew up on this street in the late 70's/early 80's. My grandfather's lumber company built the pews at St. Dom's. My parents were married there, my sister and I were baptized there.... it breaks my heart to see what has happened to this neighborhood... I would give anything to see it restored to a safe, clean, family neighborhood. Was her small amount of money really worth her life?

Austintown, Boardman, Niles, Canfield, Girard, Mineral Ridge, Poland, Sruthers, Lowelville, McDonald, and Liberty are all COMMUNITIES that have been affected by globalization, and outsourcing.Add up their population, and then compare it to Youngstown, though I don't know for certain. I would bet they are more populous than Youngstown. There are still areas of Detroit, and Cleveland that are very livable. Granted their economies are just a small fraction of what they used to be, they still have pockets of civilized livable space. My point is not to justify, or be a proponent of these tactics(globalization, outsourcing), my point is, just because an area's population endures tough economic circumstances, that is no excuse for the moral fabric to completely deteriorate. Also I understand that is natural for crime to increase when economic hardship hit's. The crime that was committed in this case is extreme, and then some. This is inexcusable. When an eighty year old woman is no longer safe to go to church, I don't care if you are a liberal or a conservative. You have to take a long hard look at what is causing this. It has to be fixed otherwise like I said this is going to be an unimaginable place to live. We have come so far in many aspects of American society, we have also taken many steps back. This is most certainly an example of us taking a step back.

Having a Sheriff that is so old he belongs in a home does not help. The Mayor needs to go as well as a total shakeup of YPD. It is time for precincts to be set up. Running the whole show from downtown is not the way to do things. Youngstown needs at least 4 precinct houses . More scout cars on patrol.

I can't believe what I'm reading. I lived in this area for five years, These so called thugs have no reasoning for what they do, they do it because they can get away with it. There is no other reason, so don't look for it, it doesn't exist. The sad part is that we look for reasons and forget what the issue is. An old woman has been murdered at a respectable, well know church. I'm so sorry for the family and friends that knew her. Don't try and turn this into something its not. What it is, is a killing of a human being. Doesn't have anything to do with poverty and how bad things are here. They kill because they can get away with it. Has been a problem here for awhile. I've read some good ideas from some of the posts on how to solve it. But, this like all the other killings will be forgotten here in the months to come.

"Silence i wasnt saying it was racism that caused her murder, it was greed and the hunger to steal from an easy target an elderly woman which is sad. I was asking you since you made the comparison between New Hampshire and Youngstown and the black population are you saying black people are the problem."
.

Not Black people , BUT a subculture within the Black community. You can turn on MTV or BET any given moment of the day and be subject to the stereotype gangbanger and thug image.
You can't ignore facts, and the facts are over the last TWENTY years Over 95 % of the murders in Youngstown have been commited by Black people. Now there are those that would like to deflect the direct issue and assign blame on poverty, but in the case of New Hampshire there are many more people living below the poverty level then there are people in the entire City of Youngstown. So it would stand that if poverty was the sole determining factor the state and city would have comparable numbers based on the ratio of poverty. It might be noted that a recent study has indicated that the suburbs of Youngstown have a poverty level of 14 %, not as high as Youngstown but a high enough number that you would see a higher murder rate as compared to Youngstown (if modeling is used based on poverty).
Now others in this forum would like to assign DRUGS as a cause to this tragedy, now I won't be able to argue with this assertion on its merits.
But lets not forget that many a person has made the claim ( One I agree with ) that there are more people doing drugs in the suburbs then in Youngstown. I can find no fact's to back up this claim , but if you just looked at population demographics and bahavior it would not be a reach to think this. But within this claim then you encounter another dilemma, if more people in the suburbs are doing drugs then those in the city , why then is not the murder rate higher in the suburbs.
A better comparison could have been the City of Warren a few years in the past. There was a time when the murder rate in Youngstown was more then three time higher then Warren, and they had similar demographics. A great guy in Warren Councilman Dean has been warning the City of Warren to prepare themselves to the fact that Warren was heading the way of Youngstown with it's murder rate if they did not do anythink. The Mayor at his (and the population of Warren's) own hazard ignored him and went so far as to lay off from the Police force. Now we see the trend in Warren heading to historic levels in murder.
This brings us back full circle, that the problem lies within a subculture within the BLACK community. To deal with an issue honestly you have to be able to say things that hurt sometimes, you also have to accept things that are painful to accept. This is in fact a life and death issue after all, so I don't feel hesitant to say what needs to be said.

All of these comments show us how important safety is to our community and how the people feel about where the trouble is.

This trouble we face now is the result of 50 years of social indifference and liberal policies.

This brings to mind what I often heard while working in a corp. setting...

"If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem."

If we do not settle our safety concerns in our cities and states, we could face a backlash of citizen anger that will lead to extreme socialism, which asks the question - are you a productive citizen contributing to society, or are you burden to society and have no reason for exisitng?

The next few years of social declination will determine where we end up, but the current trend does not look good.

While I agree something needs to be done about the violent crimes in Youngstown; sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture. There has been a dramatic increase in violent crimes across the nation in cities big and small since the beginning of this depression; and the longer it lasts the more violent crime is increasing.

Here is an article from the LA Times that is getting virtually the same kind of comments from readers as we are making here in Youngstown.
http://projects.latimes.com/homicide/...

My point is that if the problem is happening everywhere and its corresponds to the economy than the solution is jobs!
Perhaps we should all contact our elected representatives and encourage them to submit a grant request from the jobs bill to employ as many citizens at $10 an hour part time with no benefits to be put to work cleaning up the city, planting community gardens, doing minor repair work on public buildings (ie. new gutters on Stambaugh Golf course).

Even if the drug dealers and users don't participate in the program, seeing hundreds of people on the street cleaning up the neighborhoods is going to greatly reduce the opportunity to commit crimes without being witnessed.

The justification for paying $10 is the encourage participation, part time is to make it easy for them to participate at their convenience and to prevent those that are on public assistance from losing their long term assistance, and no benefits is because this will a temporary program.

Lets be real people this is just Youngstown we don't have the power to fix the economy or make drugs legal on a national level (which is what it would take to get the benefits of reduced usage and reduced crime). We need to focus on the community level to address the problem and the whole reason we are having this increase in violent crime is due to a lack of money in the area.

How about YSU college kids who rent ? So if the parents can afford to send them to college they can afford to pay more for rent . Right ? In no way, shape, or form do we pray to DIE. My Aunt Angie was a cancer SURVIVOR! I'm not sure how the word is used within your vocabulary but in the rest of the world's that means TO LIVE. And if you haven't heard the news, their is a suspect that was arrested TODAY. Not to appease us "white heathens" but to bring him to justice for doing an unthinkable thing!

Furthermore, it does not matter whether the sick individual who committed the crime was white, black, green, orange, or pink. For you to make him look like someone God chose to perform this horrendous act is repulsing to me.

ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED!!!

Remember Jack Hunter? Republican Mayor of Youngstown? Those were proud, proud days!

No crime (no mafia, Jack was too tuff!, and Republicans don't take bribes or put up with any GUFF!!!).

Plenty of JOBS (Republicans LOVE jobs! Jack Hunter made sure, as is required of ALL Republican office holders, to ensure that there were lots and lots of GOOD PAYING jobs!)

No CRACK (Republicans HATE drugs. Especially CRACK! Is it any wonder that there was no crack until JACK HUNTER was GONE?!?)

The OLD people of today were much YOUNGER then ( are you in your 80's? Under Jack Hunter you would have been in your 50's! Need I say more?)

So, to reiterarate, Youngstown under a REPUBLICAN, like JACK C. HUNTER = GOOD! No CRIME! Lots of JOBS! And old people were YOUNGER!!!

(also, when JACK C. HUNTER was the MAYOR, that guy named "MOOK" did not exist. And if he DID exist, and had tried this, the boys from the local ITAM would have "fixed" that problem, much to the delight of the YPD at the time, who were pretty busy keeping the MAFIA in line by trying to accept all the money they could from them, hoping to keep it off the streets (See U.S. vs. Jim Trafficant, US District court).

Also what gives some people the right to jump to a conclusion saying ignorant stuff about people they dont know anything about and dont have anything to do with the situation in question with no facts at all to the point there is racial/religious/ political bs and etc stuff being stated. Some of the things I have read on this vindy is some reasons why some countries dont have alot of respect for us Americans as a whole generalizing all of us. Also last time I had checked currect me if I am wrong this young black male was only charged not convicted and charged as guilty of murder currect? So where is these facts at that he is automatically guilty? I am in no way defending this young person but just because they have someone in custody doesn't mean that they are always the person who did the crime is my only point. But if he did it he deserves everything coming to him for what he did he didn't have to kill this elderly woman she probably wouldn't have put up a fight at all and just gave him what he wanted.

Everyone's days are numbered and God knew from All Time when you would be called.+++But who among you will take her place at Mass and pray? Who among you will stop the hate?+++Who will say just one prayer?
How much better to Light just One Candle than to curse the darkness!
God Bless!

"Your town is absolute garbage!"

And where is your paradise that you reside in? Would love to read your daily paper and news and comments.

"It's not the black peoples' fault, it's all of these pork-eating goyim who rule this area's fault."

Please if your going to comment, expand your mind a little, instead of the same old boring posts you type. I'm sure your teachers taught you more then that.

"Why were all of foxtrot's comments removed, and the racist rants left posted?"

If you know how to copy and paste, do that on the racist rants from the comments? Maybe I'm naive but I don't see any racist comments.

The issue isn't race. The issue is our community secluding into its own hole hoping that crime will stop. Other comments on other topics state that the issue on crime is the cultural difference amongst the different area's of the city. The last time I checked federal, state, and local laws applied to the entire area. Race, gender, age, and income does not give anyone the right to commit such horrific crimes. This young man needs to be made an example of not only for his crime, but for the citizens of Youngstown to wake up and become part of the solution. The people of Youngstown need to become much more vigilant against criminal activity!

Silence_Dogood :

"Why , Why , Why is there TWICE as many murders in just the City of Youngstown then there is in the ENTIRE state of New Hampshire."

We are much further south and global warming has affected us more ? Well if it's not that how about our culture here in Youngstown ?

Jay sez: Do we have a problem with crime ?

I am taken aback that there are people who subscribe to this thinking. The fatherless group has just as much dignity in their personhood as you. Fatherless children may grow up at higher risk to commit crimes, I am not arguing that. I would support that. Birth control has already proliferated this country, so obviously, that doesn't solve the issue. Abortion to weed out the fatherless? Come on, killing our children has done nothing to help anyone anywhere at any time. Perhaps, as a community we should all try to embrace and help the single mother by being a role model. Perhaps these children growing up in fatherless homes would do much better if all of you looked around to see who you could become a role model for. Or is it easier for you to sit back and suggest killing them? Get up, get out there, and do something. And by the way, what do you think Angeline might say about this? I don't think that she would suggest killing children who are the most vulnerable of all, in their mother's womb. What a disgrace to her memory to post something like that. To suggest getting a liscence to become a parent....Remeber, being a parent is not a right, its a gift. A gift. A blessing. Do something to help those in your community around you. I believe that Angeline was rock steadfast in her faith. She probably would be praying for you and this man that killed her. God bless her family, my prayers go out to you. Its tragedy all around, and it certainly doesn't get better when we try to fix it by killing our children. I pray for Angeline, her family, her killer, his family, and those at St Dominics. Leaving the church gives in to the evil.
