Fee charged for those late in renewing vehicle or driver's licenses

Published: Mon, January 11, 2010 @ 5:26 p.m.

COLUMBUS — The state’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles expects to receive more calls in coming months from Ohioans angry about new fees for those who are late in renewing their driver’s licenses and vehicle plates.

“We’re getting a lot of those right now,” said Lindsey Bohrer, spokeswoman for the state BMV. “We expect we’ll probably be getting a lot more of those for the next year.”

Last year, as part of the biennial state transportation budget, lawmakers approved a number of fee changes, increasing the cost of vision screenings, temporary license plates, personalized plates and commercial plates.

Additionally, the legislation included a new $20 late fee for Ohioans who are more than seven days late in registering their vehicles or renewing their driver’s licenses.

Can we get a $20 fee amount off it we get our drivers license or license plates early?? With all the people who have had job loss, companies closed, the economy is in recession and those whom are trying to make ends meet should not be having to pay for late payments unless it is more than 90 days late. Who bought a new car, got a new place to live in or for whatever reason to try and put a $20 fee if the person is seven days late ?? Posted by Jarad

They should have just increased the plate fee and allowed everyone to contribute . Now those who can least afford it will pay .

I don't agree at all about this, but it is what it is. This was changed since October 1,2009 and it was on the news and in the papers. Don't be late in paying. I just got my renewal in the mail yesterday and my expiration date isn't until 3/14, so I have more then enough time to pay it, and if I'm late then it's my own fault and just like any other bill, if I'm late I have to pay a penalty.

Strickland was right when he said he opposed any new taxes...why worry about taxes when he has a bunch of 'late" fees and "increased" fees for every permit given by any state agency!!

I'm running out of savings soon ,doubt I can make next months mortgage payment. Unemployment still screwing me around. repeted calls and still getting a run around ! People are getting very tired . Soon there will be the second shot heard around the world for the next hundred years history books.

You also pay for plates from the day you got a temp tag. So for those 30 days you get to pay twice

What the DMV *really* ought to do is ask for proof of insurance, not just a signed statement that you have it.

It's a good idea, and it's the law.
