Gunbattle with Youngstown police leaves one man dead

Published: Sun, January 3, 2010 @ 5:55 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — An unidentified city man about 30 years old was killed in a gunbattle with police at about 1:15 p.m. today outside the Eastway Apartments near McGuffey Road on the East Side — the second homicide in the first three days of the year.

Capt. Rod Foley of Youngstown Police Department said three Youngstown police officers fired on the man while responding to the apartment complex, where the man had gone looking for a woman who lived there.

The man had fired one shot through an apartment window from the outside into a woman’s apartment, fired through doors from inside the hallway and confronted three or four people in the building, Foley said.

The man then came outside the apartment, making threats and by some accounts firing at officers, when the officers fired at him, Foley said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Foley said, adding that he didn’t know how many times the man was shot.

No other injuries were reported.

Hey, can you tell me where I can find some pearl-handled six-shooters,matching holster, a horse complete with saddle, and a cowboy hat, too. Bring back the Western's on TV. Yee Haw, its the Wild, Wild, West all over again. What a Marketing Genius for Youngstown. Forget about the Business Incubators, lets get some hitching posts placed all over the City, call the bars "Saloon's", get some dancing girls and old fashioned piano's, and lets Advertise the heck out of Youngstown as a Western-style living, where you can ride proudly through the streets on your horse and maybe, just maybe, you'll witness, or even be involved in, a good old-fashioned gun fight!. Its only three days into 2010 and the City has recorded its second murder. Regardless of how it happened, it happened.

Thank God the Officers are ok! No Officer wants to ever take a life, but in order to preserve their own, or the lives of others, it must be done when necessary. May God watch over us!

These cops make way too much money and they have to many "special" perks. Just ask the Mayor. I wonder if he even understands that several of his Police Officers confronted an active shooter and terminated the threat before he went into the nearby church? AMEN to Pastor Blackwell for telling it like it is!

So you just let someone do what they want when there shooting? Let him go to a church or maybe eat dinner and the hell with the innocent bystanders. So the YPD are damned if they do or damned if they don't. They kill someone thats shooting a gun around and get blasted about it and then if they don't shoot at him because he wants to go to the church, Lord knows what he would do in there (hostage maybe?) and people feel bad for him. Amazing! Once again, he shouldn't even be shooting a gun in a public dwelling or anywhere for that matter but thats always over looked. Once again, feel bad for the victim. Unreal.

why did it take according to telly news...18 crusiers ( huh? and 12 or more officers firing all at once to bring down one man? per chance more time at the target range is needed! instead of sitting on I680 blocking traffic at 3 PM because a BEER TRUCK is pulled off IN THE GRASS on the left..yes you must close down both lanes when the truck was 15 feet off the road with the flashers on! While ypd sat all cozy in the cruiser (beer anyone?) for an hour! wow like there wasnt a crack dealer meth maker kid beater or all around shooter quarter a mile away...how pathetic!

What did you think would happen janeyblue, an Officer is being shot at, and everyone goes no matter what. From your vast knowledge of how to react in active shooting situations, what would you have done? It is known fact no matter how much you train an Officer’s accuracy in a stressful shooting situation is lower than at the range. janeyblue it sounds like you were mad in the traffic incident because you could not get to your very important meeting with the independent contractors on Oakhill and Myrtle (HAHA!!!) . Yes, These Officers responded to a situation that is part of their job but if you look at the whole situation they did it admirably. A dangerous person like this could not of been allowed to get away, the Officers had to do what they did. Lets support YPD instead of criticizing them for their pay and benefits. They do a job most of us would never be able or want to do

You can't be serious? I don't care if the whole YPD and surrounding departments came to the scene. Someone was shooting in the open. What if that was your neighborhood or around your children, would you change your tune then? Like I said, there damned if they do and damed if they don't. I think you need a reality check.

"I was standing there looking, I told everybody to get back inside the church in case this guy shot over this way. Cause it was just random shots flying all over the place, okay," said John M. Blackwell, Sr., Pastor of Courts of Praise Church, " This guy was swearing and cursing, and he said No, I'm not giving up, I'm gonna kill you guys, you don't mean nothing to me!"

33's coverage of the shooting is much more detailed than this is- http://www.wytv.com/mostpopular/story...

That idiot got exactly what he deserved and by the grace of God no one else got hurt in the process and the woman he was seeking wasn't there.

I have no problem with the outcome. I just have somewhat of an issue of how many cops it took to bring the one guy down. I understand that this could've really gotten ugly, but all those cruisers are crazy.

It took three officers against one active shooter. All of the other officers came to the scene because the officer in distress call was probably put out. How many friends would you want to back you in a gun fight? If you were an officer and you heard that your fellow officers were in a gun fight, and this gunman had already shot at innocent people, would you try to get to the scene?
I love the criticism..."I have some issue with how many cops it took to bring one guy down". What a joke.
That's right, it takes only one well placed shot from one officer, and the rest is overkill...because that's what you saw in a movie.
An unfortunate situation in which these officers acted in a brave and appropriate manner. Great job Y.P.D.

They outta take the pistoles off the cops and arm them with sawed-off lite weight shotguns loaded with OObuckshot. This should cut down on the number of misses. It usually has the tendency to stop the perpetrater in his/her tracks. In each gun there would be 45 projectiles and shotguns seldom miss. You could clean your streets post-haste!!

The language guy, if you need to make a point then you can do without the F-bombs and the anger, that just shows limited vocabulary.Try to talk intellegent to get your point across. anyway....

""According to police, Tutt was first arrested in 1981 when he was 19 and charged with rape and aggravated robbery. He served more than two years in prison at that time. Police arrested Tutt again in 1990 on charges of felonious assault and theft. He was arrested in 1995 and charged with assault on a police officer, possession of dangerous drugs, domestic violence and resisting arrest.""
Rape?? Aggravated robbery?? Felonious assault?? Assault on a police officer?? Domestic violence??
Seems intent on hurting people to me, just from his police records?
http://www.vindy.com/news/2010/jan/04...

""The events leading to Tutt’s Sunday run-in with law enforcement began just after 1 p.m. when Tutt walked into building 1093 in the apartment complex carrying a loaded firearm and a bevy of ammunition.""

What gets me in the paragraph is the "loaded firearm and a bevy of ammunition" and considering his past assaults, that doesn't make a good combination.

"I see alot of white people on where with some very ignorant comments"

Amazes me how people can preach, but in the same breath, say something that actually should be racism in todays politically correct society. Shouldn't people love one another instead of ranting and raving about there skin color? Just my concept.

Carjacking is where the poor subculture gets a chance to drive without the hassle of buying . This form of wealth distribution has really caught on by the subculture . Should they be punished for merely wanting to joyride or should this indiscretion be overlooked ? This shooting may very well have been accidental .
