Complaints on smoking-ban violations drop in Ohio

Published: Sun, February 28, 2010 @ 1:48 p.m.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Complaints filed against businesses for violating Ohio’s smoking ban are dropping, a sign that more bars and restaurants are following the law, state health officials said.

Ohio voters approved the ban in 2006, and since enforcement began the number of complaints has dropped from 21,604 in 2007 to 9,228 in 2009, according to an analysis by the Dayton Daily News published Sunday.

During that time period, about 3,300 complaints involved businesses in Montgomery County, which includes Dayton, the newspaper said. Only Cuyahoga and Hamilton counties have had more complaints.

But following the statewide trend, complaints in Montgomery County have declined — from 1,450 in the last eight months of 2007 to 522 in all of 2009.

Compliance has gotten so good that recent complaints involve repeat offenders, not so much first-time violators, said Mandy Burkett, chief of the health department’s indoor environments section.

Why does your daughter choose to work in an environment that is killing her?

Oh you're absolutely nuts. The smoking ban hasn't done a damn thing. I could name half a dozen places in town that let you smoke. They just take out the ashtrays and hand you an empty beer bottle, and thank god for that. No piece of paper is going to tell me where I can smoke and where I can't.

take your blinders off and realize the complaints are down because even the officials don't care. How do I know this? I was smoking a cigarette right next to 2 cops at the pub, who were also smoking.

The smoking ban has been a big success in Ohio. Those few establishments who fail to follow the state ban will eventually close up shop if not from fines then lack of customers. It's great to be able to go into any restaurant and eat without worrying about smoke smells. :)

Ever try calling the complaint line? Ever see anything done about it? I work at an area hospital and each and every day I walk through a cloud of smoke because they aren't enforcing the ban. I've called several times and nothing has been done. JOKE.

It is a joke and thank god for that. I'm sorry UnionForever but its not just a few places. Almost every where ignores the ban.

Y.S.U. for example completely ignores the ban. People are still smoking, but now instead of having ashtrays to put our butts in we have to throw them on the ground because they removed them all.

This law is absolutely nuts. No one cares, No one enforces it. The damn thing should be repealed.

You know first you didn't want us smoking on airplanes so we gave you the entire plane, then you didn't want us smoking in Restaurants so we gave you your own section, you weren't happy with that so we gave you the entire damn place.

So now we're huddling outside of public buildings and on Y.S.U.'s campus smoking in the freezing cold, and apparently you can't even let us have that. You ban smoking on all public properties.

What's it going to come to? the only place I can exercise my right to poison myself is in my own house, in my bedroom with the door locked, windows closed, and underneath the blankets?
