Bruce 'Boo' Timko | Canfield

HIS THIRD straight Vindicator athlete-of-year award. Timko has made state tournament appearances four straight years, including two while at Warren JFK. His latest concluded with a 10th-place finish this fall when he shot 80-74 — 155. Medalist Michael Ricaurte of Columbus St. Charles had 144. “I had a rough first day and it put me out of it,” Timko said of his 80. “There wasn’t extra pressure, but I did want to go out my senior year with a state championship. A 10th isn’t the finish I wanted, but you’ll have bad days. I didn’t play [well] when I needed to. It happens in golf.” Including two years at JFK, his four-year stroke average was 36.4, As a junior in 2009 — his first year at Canfield, he shared state runner-up honors in Division I with a single-round score of 75. Inclement weather reduced tournament play to one day. Canfield’s regular season was meaningful, too, because the Michael Murphy-coached Cardinals won the AAC Red Tier crown for a third straight year. After visiting Ohio State, Kent and Virginia, Timko decided to attend Ohio State and join the Buckeyes’ golf team. His earlier finishes at state while at JFK were 13th as a freshman and 7th as a sophomore, both in Div. III. He’s a familiar face at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, but he’d most likely swap three of the four state appearances for one title. Timko is busy with basketball now, but golf remains No. 1 sport. “Now it’s nothing but basketball, but, once it’s over, it’ll be nothing but golf.”
