NYC mayor: ‘Sad day’ if mosque gets shouted down

Published: Mon, August 16, 2010 @ 1:54 p.m.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says it would be “a sad day for America” if opponents successfully kill plans for a mosque proposed near the World Trade Center site.

Bloomberg has been among a few outspoken elected officials supporting the plans for an Islamic center and mosque two blocks from ground zero.

On Friday, President Barack Obama also backed the right for the developers to build a mosque there. He added over the weekend that he was not commenting on the wisdom of building a mosque close to ground zero.

Some have said it is insensitive because the terrorists who struck the buildings in 2001 were Islamic extremists.

Bloomberg applauded Obama on TOday for backing the mosque. He declined to read what he called nuances into the president’s additional remarks on Saturday.

And 911 wasn't a sad day for America? Build it somewhere else in the city idiots.

Where were all the right wing lunatics when WalMart began planning a store on the Gettysburg battlefield? Over 3,100 Union Soldiers lost their lives on the battlefield.

I would not allow for a mosque near ground zero, nor a church or temple for that matter.

But I suspect the right is attempting to restrict American's freedoms because the don't like muslims.

I can't imagine why we don't like Muslims they only killed 3000 Americans. This is like the Japanese building a shrine at pearl harbor in 1943
Yes they have a legal "right" to build it but I would starve before I worked on that building

And do any of you tearjerkers remember that it was at least 6 months before any islamic religious leaders actually condemmed the bombers. Until then the best you heard was a few feeble "they were misguided" statements.

Get your heads out of your rectums lemmings!

ps: Wonder if obowser had his teleprompter up and running when he made the first statement or was it up for when he did the soft shoe?

I suspect that they want to build this mosque as a shrine for the magnificent nineteen who perished on 9-11-01 .

This is The USA. Read your US Contstitution.
The first amendment to the US Constitution states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

The Muslims, Christians, Jews, etc. have the right to build a house of worship in accordance with local building and zoning codes.

redvert....What, no comment on Bush's speech in post #7 on this thread? Tell me what is worse about the remarks that Obama made in his speech compared too what Bush said?

Okay, let me take them one at a time.

First, it is when obowser makes a statement that he can not read from a teleprompter that he screws up.

Second, Bush was a a-hole for trying to play nice with Islam.

That being said, is it possible for a lib to face the fact that obowser can screwup without trying to deflect to Bush?

That is the difference between a pub and a lib, a pub can call out a pub but you libs must remain in suck up status!!!

redvert....You voted for bush twice, right?

You don't believe in freedom of religion, right?

Do you have a list of politicians that don't read their speeches from paper, her hand or a teleprompter?

Here is a hour long video of republicans reading questions and Obama answering them without anything written down and without a teleprompter. The questioning part starts twenty minutes in. You might not want to watch it, the republicans get owned.
