Boys accused in attack stay in custody

Staff report

The three teens charged in the July 21 baseball-bat beating of 15-year-old Verdarell Lowery of Warren will remain in juvenile custody until at least their next hearing.

Johntee Daniel, 16; Jovan Daniel, 15; and Shawdon Flowers, 15; have appeared in Trumbull County Juvenile Court for a plea hearing, pleaded innocent and were ordered to remain in the juvenile facility.

Jovan Daniel and Flowers appeared for their hearing Friday before Magistrate Monte Horton. Johntee Daniel’s plea hearing occurred as part of his initial appearance last week.

Johntee Daniel’s next hearing will be in the latter part of August, said Stanley Elkins, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor. Elkins said he didn’t know when the two others would have their next hearing.

The three are charged with felonious assault and other charges after police say they participated in the videotaped assault on Lowery that took place at the corner of Brier Street and Duke Avenue Southeast. The assault left Lowery in critical condition at Akron Children’s Hospital.
