KINGS BAY NAVAL SUBMARINE BASE, Ga. (AP) — The first U.S. women allowed to serve aboard submarines will be reporting for duty by 2012, the Navy said today as the military ordered an end to one of its few remaining gender barriers.
The cramped quarters and scant privacy aboard submarines, combined with long tours of up to 90 days at sea, kept them off limits to female sailors for 16 years after the Navy began allowing women to serve on all its surface ships in 1994.
There were some protests, particularly from wives of sub sailors, after the military began formulating a plan last fall. But it received no objections from Congress after Defense Secretary Robert Gates notified lawmakers in mid-February that the Navy intended to lift the ban. The deadline for Congress to intervene passed at midnight today.
Rear Adm. Barry Bruner, who led the Navy's task force on integrating women onto submarines, brushed aside questions from reporters about the potential for sexual misconduct or unexpected pregnancies among a coed crew.

Imagine a woman with all the seamen she can take?
WOW what a bigoted a** hole
i served on a submarine and can't imagine how this could work. do they expect all these young people to just deny their natural urges, or do they just let some of them go crazy to the utter frustration of all the non-participants? or does everyone get to play? and do officers and senior p.o.'s get to go first? can't imagine how the wives would put up with this!
why is it that these married men can't keep it locked down for three months?
says more about the marriages of these folks than anything else
what, you think it's fair to let the married men stew while the single ones cavort freely? women should probably not serve in the seagoing navy. let them serve on land and large vessels if they must but not on small ships. it's just a distraction and not fair to anyone. some girls may want to, but navy wives will not like this. sometimes tradition is better than change. of course if it were up to me, women would not serve in any combat situation or on u.s. navy ships.
Anyone who thinks its just the "man's" fault, has obviously never served in the military and observed how these females act. Talk about going crazy. Queens for however long their tour is.....
wow, another poster who only knows how to swear and cuss rather than to make an intelligent point. you probably never served either.
I am all for equality, but this is a dangerous mix in such confined space for 3 months. The distractions will lead to not only errors on the job, but to 90 days of midnite sexcapades, extorsion, jealousies and fits of rage. Don't assume men are the problem. Some service women are agressive in playing the field and enjoy the game to alieviate boredom. This plan is doomed to fail. I see this as a 3 year run before they pull the plug.
When I was in the Naval Construction Battallions (Hoorah) the women got passed around like doobies. I would be willing to bet a couple of house payments that more then half come back completely knocked up. I'm not sayin it to be a jerk it's just reality in the service let along locking em in with a bunch of creepy submariners. I was in Kingsland, we built acres of parking lots for em.
Once a Seabee always a Seabee!
I can't believe that in the 21st century our answer to problems between the sexes is still to restrict women. Sexual behavior -- both consensual and non-consensual -- is a persistent issue, especially in the military, and we need to examine the sexual politics of both men and women so that we can coexist as human beings.
You can't tell me we haven't evolved to a place where it's possible for men and women to platonicly share living quarters. Are we really no better than the sum of our most base hormones? If so, then that's unacceptable and we need to begin demanding more of ourselves.
It's all about what we learn is acceptable behavior. Men need to stop seeing women as sexual objects, and women need to stop seeking their self-worth via men's opinions of them. But restricting women's options in order to A.) "protect" them, and B.) make it easier on the men, will only continue to send the message that women are not worth the effort to improve our species. And hence the culture will continue to devalue them.
This can`t be a good idea. I would think it opens up the possiblity for problems down the road. Not ever serving on a sub I have to wonder...what provisions would be made for the women to serve on board? I imagine the space is quite limited on a sub; therefore now do you section off part of the sub just for the women? (Showers, bathrooms, sleeping quarters) If you do, then it becomes a problem where the men may resent that special treatment the women are receiving. When resentment is involved it may lead to hazing, loss in productivity, sexual harrassment.
Also, you are putting 18-24 yr olds in close quarter, stressful, situations and asking them to show restraint for extended periods of time. I have to ask, why do you think shows like MTV`s "Real World" are popular with the 18-32 demographic? Perhaps because that age group could relate to that type of behavior?
I`ve said this before, just because people have a right to do something doesn`t make it the correct choice to make. Nothing was wrong with how things went before. Why change?
Why are women penalized when it's inconvenient for men to accommodate them? Who cares if adjustments need to be made? It's embarrassing they haven't been made already. Women are entitled to serve their country just as men are. If we hadn't had such sexists standards and beliefs in the past, this wouldn't be an issue now. And I can't believe that people would rather allow sexist rules to continue to exist well into the 21st century rather than make some long-overdue changes.
I assure you, if we have the ability to get from the deepest trenches of the ocean all the way to the moon, we are able to make it possible for men and women to live on a submarine.
Adjustments may not be a simple fix. From what I`m told about subs, there is very limited space. What if adjustments can`t be made or could be made but cost multi-millions of dollars to retrofit. Is it worth it just to make a point?
I guess I wouldn`t have a problem with women serving if they don`t mind showering with the guys, using the same bathrooms or having the same sleeping quarters.
If they could make it happen with little taxpayer cost or trouble among the crew. So be it.
Personally, I wouldn`t want my daughter in that situation but to each their own.
Nothing was wrong with how things went before?
really? why change?
The only argument I've seen presented in these comments is that the submarine will turn into some sex club because women will serve alongside men.
Does anyone have a real argument? Are women incapable of performing the duties on a submarine? If anything, having women in such a small, confined space might actually make more sense.
1) Back up your statement with some facts. I think you could argue most men don't either.
2) Have you ever been on a submarine? Do you know about the physical limitations placed upon recruits to the naval academy?
3) Please explain to me which actions on a submarine women can not perform because the are not wired or are not physically strong enough to complete.
With the women on the ship or not isn't going to make a married man cheat. If he is going to cheat he is going to do so regaurdless of where he is at. And im sure with all duties on the ship they make sure you can actually perform them before putting you there.
actually i find it amusing to be accused of trying to protect the women (because we care for them) and for trying to make it convenient for the men (the ones who design, build and operate the submarines). and how does this devalue women? were women also devalued until they were allowed to become suicide bombers like the men? of course not. we don't all have to do all the same things.
@USA1 My sn is Nunya22 only saying that because I know there is another poster here that just go by Nunya.
Maybe I didn't put what I meant very clear. But what I mean is basically if the men are going to cheat they will do it on the ship and off the ship. Temptation is everywhere you go in life if the marriage/serious relationship was real they wouldn't cheat on their wife/girlfriend.
As for the duties I know not all females can do that but why not let the qualified ones in?
@USA1 That's okay.
Personally I feel it is a real test of trust for a relationship. If the man or woman cant fight temptation they were not ready to be in the marriage/serious relationship to begin with in my opinion.
well said nunya22.
"since the Navy went co-ed on it's surface ships pregnancies skyrocketed. "
well, statistically, that makes a ton of sense. It should be about a 1000% jump since, you know, there weren't any women on the ships before. You do understand that men can't get pregnant right?
How about some real facts?
"I've never served on a sub but I've been in combat, light weapons infantry, and most woman wouldn't be able to meet the physical or psychological demands."
Most women...perhaps. I know a lot of men who couldn't either. I guess that should preclude them from serving. What physical and psych demands are you referring to?
Also, you still haven't explained the following:
3) Please explain to me which actions on a submarine women can not perform because the are not wired or are not physically strong enough to complete.
