Ryan, Henderson stand out in the 17th District contests

Published: Sun, April 25, 2010 @ 12:00 a.m.

Congressman Tim Ryan of Niles, seeking a fifth two-year term, has two challengers in his bid for the Democratic nomination in the May 4 primary, but neither has made the case for replacing an effective, hardworking representative of the 17th District.

His two opponents, businessman and former Girard Councilman Dan Moadus and Robert Crow of Youngstown, an airline liquor agent and owner of a company that buys and rehabilitates homes, are hoping to benefit from the anti-government sentiment reflected in the growing popularity of the Tea Party movement.

But the 17th District includes portions of Trumbull, Mahoning, Portage and Summit counties, and it is important to recognize that this region is only now beginning to recover from the collapse of manufacturing three decades ago. The idea that there is no benefit to be derived from the hundreds of millions of federal dollars coming to the area through the economic stimulus initiative is just plain silly.

Likewise, criticism leveled at Ryan for his strong support of the health-reform bill is little more than sound- bite politics. Even so, health care has emerged as a major issue in this election.

On the Republican side, both candidates for the party nomination are connected to the health care industry: Dr. Murrell “Bing” Henderson of Tallmadge is director of the Affinity Medical Center’s Department of Occupational Health in Massillon; Jim Graham of Cortland is manager of clinical pharmacy operations at Humility of Mary Health Partners.

Henderson and Graham are both opposed to the health-reform initiative, but neither offers any substantive solutions to the ever-increasing cost, the millions of Americans who do not have health insurance, which shifts the cost to those who do, or the egregious practices of some insurance companies.

Neither has a political track record; we looked at their backgrounds, life experiences and their positions on such issues as job creation in making an endorsement.

Henderson’s owning a small business and also serving as a medical missionary gave him a broader background and the advantage.

Thus, we endorse Henderson for the Republican nomination for the 17th District seat.

Looking ahead

Regardless of who wins the GOP race, the general election, barring a major political upset on May 4, will feature Ryan, who has established himself as a rising star in the Democratic controlled House of Representatives.

Ryan fingerprints are on just about every major project in the 17th, from V&M Star’s $650 million expansion to General Motors’ decision to build its new compact car, the Cruze, at its Lordstown plant.

The Vindicator endorses Ryan in the 17th District Democratic primary without reservation.

Democrats(ryan) running on let's keep the people down on the democrat welfare cotton field. Evidence by his vote for Cap & Trade-voting for higher utility bills-coming in the future.--voting for higher gasoline prices- take the train, not the car, that what concerns democrats.

Evidence by his vote on healthscam bill,
Ryan claimed no illegals will be included, first thing Ryan-Wilson wants is to add 18 million illegals through AMNESTY.

Democrats to cut Medicare--Screw the Seniors right into the ground, but mine for votes from illegals-driving costs skyhigh.

Akron NARAL- applaulds Ryan on his pro-choice abortion stance.

Basically, The Democrat's are saying " Let's make Ohio a little Greece" or living on the welfare-entitlement train, fast track to economic inferno--coming soon the democrat national sales tax.

If the editors of both the Vindicator and the Tribune ever wonder about why newspaper readership is in decline, and why people are turning to other sources for news and opinion, they needn’t look any further than their respective organizations.

As a long time area politician who has run in eleven elections (not fifteen as mistakenly claimed by David Skolnic), I have been both endorsed and passed over by both papers. Possessing nothing more than “standard issue sensitivities”, I of course marveled at their insight when endorsed and was appalled at their lack of judgment when passed over, so perhaps the criticism I am about to offer will be just viewed as sour grapes. So be it.

What can not be glossed over however is the fact that both papers displayed a level of parochialism that one would not expect from people who expect their customers (readers) to accept their viewpoints on important national issues. Both papers in the past have railed against “pork” and “earmarks”, but issued their endorsements based on how much money Tim Ryan has brought to the district.

After years of writing editorials elevating reckless government spending almost to the level of crime, the vindicator incredibly says that they endorse Ryan without reservation because, “His fingerprints are on just about every project in the 17th District.” They omitted the word “spending” before project.

And the Tribune actually had the nerve to endorse Ryan after saying this. “His damaging votes on such important national issues such as the bank bailouts, Cap and Trade, Health care, and the so called Employee Free Choice Act, are out of touch with his constituents, and not in the national interest.”

You can draw your own conclusion, but I think the editorial boards of both papers are cowards. They give the appearance that they are endorsing Tim Ryan because they think he will win, and they don’t want to risk having less access after the election.

Timmy had NOTHING to do with the V&M expansion except playing referee to a pissing contest. The expansion was in the works since 2008. Well before the Stimulus Bill.

Timmy sold out his constituents on Health Care and Cap and Tax. More importantly, he sold out his principles by voting for a Health Care bill that WILL pay for abortions. But, we only need to ask his ex-wife about his lack of principles.

It's also very strange that some tie MVOC to ACORN. Heather McMahon works for MVOC and just happens to be Timmy's Communication Manager.

Odd....

Tim Ryan's time in Congress will end with the November election. He has done very little for anyone in his district. The counties of Summit & Portage don't even know he's there. Dr. Henderson is an excellent choice even if the Viondy says he isn't. He want to cut Tax & Spend which is agood thing. The most important thing right now is cutting the deficit and bringing back jobs. That can only be done Henderson's way - cut the spending and taxes to bring back jobs to our area.

Tim Ryan stands out as the candidate who will allow the Valley to lose $161 million per year due to his non-resolution of the Delphi retiree pension issue. This is the latest slap in the face to an area that he allowed THOUSANDS of jobs to leave during his tenure. We demand RESULTS from our Congressmen, not playing the political cards!

MVOC certainly sounds like ACORN, Kirk Noden, I'm told is a committed Socialist from Birmingham, England and he's one MVOC's directors. They use young people to organize for politics,,church groups-anyone they can find,
Ryan is trying to legitimize these street organizers- sounds like a political replacement for ACORN.

Please advise if and when they get government funds, city, state, federal funds,. Thanks

Typical, predictable, Vindicator endorsement. I wonder how successful this paper could be if they once thought for themselves???

Tim Ryan is nothing more than Nancy Pelosi's lap dog. He never has an answer to a question and has never had an original idea. He wants to take credit for any good news (V&M) but it's Bush's fault when the bad (Delphi, GM< Denman Tire, etc.) occurs. What a joke he is. Rising star? Beam me up Scotty
