Poll: Ohioans like President Obama

Published: Thu, September 17, 2009 @ 12:08 a.m.

By Marc Kovac

COLUMBUS — Ohioans generally approve of President Barack Obama’s work in office, but they’re split on a federal overhaul of health care.

That’s according to the latest poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, released Wednesday.

Of the 1,074 Ohio voters it questioned over the past week, 53 percent gave Obama positive approval ratings, compared to 42 percent who did not.

That’s up from 49 percent — 44 percent during the institute’s July poll.

But respondents were evenly split, at 44 percent to 44 percent, on the president’s health-care plan.

“Perhaps it’s because the poll was taken immediately after the president’s nationally televised, prime-time speech,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the institute, said in a released statement.

He added, “Getting back above 50 percent in Ohio, a critical swing state, could be important for Obama, but this is a far cry from his 62 percent to 31 percent grade in [May].”

The Connecticut-based Quinnipiac regularly gauges Ohio voters’ opinions on candidates and issues.

In its latest poll, it questioned respondents’ attitudes toward the president and on Ohio candidates for U.S. Senate.

Among the results:

UA total of 49 percent of voters said they trust Obama more than congressional Republicans to handle health-care reform, compared to 28 percent who said the opposite.

Fifty percent said they believe Republicans “are more interested in seeing Obama fail than in playing a constructive role in health-care reform,” Brown said.

“Ohioans seem to like Obama more than his policies,” he added. “Their rating of his job handling the economy flipped from 46 percent to 48 percent negative in July to 48 percent to 46 percent positive in September, while on health care they are split down the middle.”

ULt. Gov. Lee Fisher holds a 26 percent to 17 percent lead over Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican George Voinovich. Another 55 percent of voters are still undecided.

Former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman leads Cleveland-area car dealer Tom Ganley, 27 percent to 9 percent, with 61 percent undecided.

Both Democrats outpaced both Republicans in potential fall matchups.

Peng,

These types of folks remind me why I voted for BHO in the first place. When we see women running around in wild costumes blathering about secret communist nazi muslims running the country I realize these people might have *been in charge*. They seem to be there to remind people to why the country voted for Obama in the first place.

Epic, how do you explain (ACORN). Do you promote pimping and prostitution, tax free. Do you agree with sexually abusing young girls for prostitution? Do you believe prostitutes should be tax exemp? Do you want to prosecute the CIA for waterboarding or blowing second hand smoke into the face of the mastermind of 911? Or the 30+ czars? Are you aware of the weird, inhumane beliefs they promote? Forced abortion, an individual's life's worth in relation to the rest of society. How much is a baby's life or an elderly person worth in relation to a healthy young adult or you? Can you tell me? Didn't Van Jones do prison time for rioting and isn''t he a communist? Pelosi calling anti-health care reform citizens angry mobs, Nazis, disruptive. Only 12% agree with Carter calling us racists. Ohio is in favor off the Bamster? No wonder Ohio is losing jobs and population fast. By the way, the angry mob is the Mafia-socialist SEIU thugs. By the way The Bamster's approval rate is 47%

Penquin, 4 more years? What about the 2010 elections? Do you believe the socialists Dems and Gop members in DC will be re-elected? Of course they will have a vast majority in the socialist dumb ethnic union loving Mahoning Valley. Maybe that's why the Valley is sooooooooooo prosperous.

No, it's promising. There is no other nation on earth where minorities live so well, prosperous, healthy, educated and free, including any African nation. People from around the entire world are risking death to migrate to America. The anti-minority racists organizations are ACORN and the SEIU, the Dem Party, Von Johnson, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the NAACP. All of them got rich exploiting black people.

This is all pretty silly if you ask me. Firstly, there is always a bump in the polls after a speech, does not matter which Party you are in. Secondly, it is not about Republicans wanting healthcare to fail, it is about Republicans wanting this version of healthcare to fail, and there are some legitimate reasons why.

I would like to see a poll on people's opinion about if you disagree with the president, does that make you a racist? Also, a poll on whether the charge of racist is overused when clearly there may be no basis for it.

12 ProAmerican (1059 comments)posted 2 months, 5 days ago

NAACP; is it racist b/c it's the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People? Is the Black Caucus racist? The Black Chamber Of Commerce? The Black Knights? The Black Student Union? The New Black Panthers? Black Liberation Theology? The Nation Of Islam?

My point is that's a ridiculously low number and if you believe that it is representative of average people walking around I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

The broad brush you use to paint a portrayal of "anti-minority racists organization" is both flawed and offensive; your argument is invalid.

Generally speaking, I think some people in Congress and the media are making too big a deal out of the race issue, like in the case of Rep. Joe Wilson. Though rude, it is not really grounds for a racist accusation. It would be like me saying, "Well, you called me a liar, so you are anti-Italian". That would make no sense, and neither does this.

I would like to see a poll on it though just to see generally how people feel about it.

15 ProAmerican (1059 comments)posted 2 months, 5 days ago

Jeff, I have some ocean front property to sell to you if you believe all the organizations I cited don't exist. Isn't ACORN racist for promoting the sexual abuse of young girls from El Salvador? Is there any better place for minorities of whites to reside? Can you name even one? If you can, why don't you migrate there like the rest of the world would prefer to immigrate to America? However, too many American citizens, like you believe you can do better under the yoke of socialism. By the way, can a white women compete in the Miss Black America Pageant? Isn't that racism? There is no racial restriction to be an entry in the Miss America Pageant, is there? My arguement is invalid? Your arguement is invalid.

16Read blog JeffLebowski (859 comments)posted 2 months, 5 days ago

I don't believe Wilson's comments are racially rooted. Having a problem with illegal immigration as a whole is vastly different than having problems with people of individual race. Frankly I support his POV on how the proposed legislation was written but don't respect how he voiced it.

I think Carter is describing more broad overtones than just a few isolated and recent incidents.

Slav, surely you can't compare the former Yugoslavia to America. Yugoslavia: def. United Slavs. The Croats and Serbs, although one people have hated and killed each other for centuries b/c of religion. The Croats supported the Nazis during WW2 and the Serbs are more East European oriented. Even their written language is different and they speak the same language. Much genocide, many Croats were Hilter's murderers and the Serbs their victims.Muslims consider everyone their enemies, in the former Yugoslavia and everywhere else. Then there are the Albanians and Gypsies and the Gypsies are hated there.

America was a debt free nation during the Jacksonian Era, he was hip to the international bankers and their business allies. Then came the Federal Reserve (created in Jeckell Island, not sure how it's spelled) and it created money (useless paper). The Fed is a quasi-govt. agency, we never elected their members which I understand is comprised of private banks weilding enormous power. It's creation is also un-constitutional.

America is the greatest nation of all time for it's citizens, peace, prosperity and opportunity. I don't deny America is far from perfect, after all it is man made and man is imperfect.

Jeff, Slav, aren't all of us bigots to a certain extent? By the way Jeff, I'm totally opposed to the KKK and the hatred they project, especially when it uses Christianty to justify their goals. If I were a member, WHICH I'M NOT, I'd be terrified by their use of violence against minorities and Jews,;I've heard of former Klansmen who quit the organization because they disagreed with their hatred, bigotry, and violence. I'm thinking about joining a militia and I'll be certain if I do, it won't accept or include the Aryan Brotherhood, KKK, Nazis as members b/c a few of them do and that's not me.

Slav, correct me if I'm wrong. YUGO is derived from PROTO INDO-EUROPEAN (SANSKRIT) Yugo = UNITED. It's too bad numerous American politicians tarnished Americans with their backstabbing. I don't have any use for them either. I thank God I'm an American; I believe many wrongs have be corrected in the past 234 years in America by Americans. This nation is man made, men are imperfect; therefore America is imperfect but she's the best nation in the world is spite of all her flaws and imperfections.

I want everyone in America to have access to capitalism, civil rights and the opportunity for improvement, whether it's the pursuit of wealth and income, education, politics and personal dignity.

pci,
Your statement is a lie. African-Americans account for less than 15% of our society, while Latinos account for about the same size demographic. Whites account for approximately 70%. That being said, Obama himself said that the majority of people who are objecting to health care reform are doing so because they oppose government, and that race is not the primary issue.

No, what's immoral is that the situation was allowed to get as out of control as it did with the previous Herbert Hoover administration. Obama didn't create this mess, he inherited it. You can thank the previous do-nothing administration for allowing this.

The economy however is already showing signs of recovery and the stock market had seen record gains under Obama.

These polls are more meaningless every day. The polls are going to be, in general, reflective of the group of sample - so when you sample 2/3 democrats and 1/3 republicans, would you be surprised that the results are somewhat 2/3 approve and 1/3 disapprove (I don't pretend to know what the sample was in THIS poll - but in general, I am understanding that many polls are not sampling true random samples or evenly split samples) So the polls mean very little. Another thing is that true leadership does not lead by polls, they lead by what is right. So who cares if a certain percentage of a democrat tilted survey are all warm and fuzzy about Obama? It doesn't change the fact that he, and more so his cronies around him, is destroying this country one day at a time - day by day.

It's amazing that republicans had 6 yrs.of being in charge and never produced anything worthwhile to even slowdown the cost of health care. Now they do everything in their power to put down this president who is at least trying to help.In 6 years they could have at least negotiated drug prices to help lower the cost of medicare and medicaid.
It wasn't long ago that many republican leaders said to let thefree market take care of itself. Now those companies are showing record profits and ceo's are making outrageous wages.I'm not a socialist, but don't you think that a salary and bonus of 8 or 9 figures is absurd.
